About The Position

The teacher provides instruction, structure, and academic support to students within a secure juvenile justice educational setting. This role requires strong classroom management, adaptability, and the ability to engage students with varying academic, behavioral, and emotional needs. Teachers are expected to create a safe, structured, and student-centered classroom environment while supporting the rehabilitative mission of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in health and physical education; or earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and completed a major in health and physical education or 45 semester hours of coursework distributed in specific areas (Personal health, safety, and care of athletic injuries; Human anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, and biomechanics of human movement; General health and physical education theory, including curriculum design and development in health and physical education; Instructional methods and skills for secondary physical education; Concepts of motor learning, instructional methods, and skills for elementary physical education; Instruction methods for elementary and secondary school health; Health and physical education electives; Instructional methods and strategies for adapted physical education; Technology in health and physical education; Principles of human nutrition; and Assessment and evaluation in the content area).
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License and endorsed in PE / Health and Driver’s Education.

  • Experience as a Health/PE Driver’s Education teacher in a secondary setting.
