About The Position

Serving as a vital facilitator of city-wide mobility, the Driver - Non-CDL position is a multifaceted role essential to the City’s transit and infrastructure stewardship. This role provides safe and efficient transportation for passengers using electric (EV) carts or other non-commercial driver’s license (CDL) vehicles. The incumbent acts as a front-line ambassador for the City, blending professional vehicle operation with the meticulous maintenance of transit facilities. From ensuring fleet reliability to upholding the aesthetic standards of city bus shelters through cleaning and graffiti removal, this position ensures a high-quality experience for all transit users.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Maryland.
  • Maintains a documented good driving record.
  • Consent to chemical substance screening (including random testing) in accordance with Federal, State, and City guidelines for the detection of drug or alcohol use.
  • Sufficient strength and agility to lift and maneuver small tools and equipment, and to climb into and operate assigned vehicles.
  • Ability to work outside in varying weather conditions for periods of up to eight (8) hours.
  • Sufficient visual acuity to operate vehicles safely during day or night and monitor road conditions; sufficient hearing to understand radio transmissions and interpersonal conversations.
  • Freedom from mental disorders that would interfere with the safe performance of described duties.

  • Some knowledge of the specific principles governing low-speed electric vehicle operation within urban environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain positive public relations.
  • Ability to interpret and execute complex oral and written instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Operates low-speed electric vehicles (EV) and other non-CDL vehicles to transport passengers in accordance with all laws and safety regulations.
  • Performs rigorous pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and immediately reports any defects or accidents to supervisory staff.
  • Serves as a relief driver for non-CDL vehicles to ensure continuous service for passengers.
  • Assists with the cleaning and maintenance of bus shelters, including trash removal and the proactive abatement of graffiti.
  • Performs routine bus washing and cleaning of facilities to maintain the professional standard of the City's transportation assets.
  • Performs other related duties as directed to support the operational needs of the Department of Parking and Transportation.
