About The Position

As a Driver License Examiner for the Department of Transportation in Allegheny County, you help ensure that every new driver meets safety standards. This position provides an opportunity to use clear communication, attention to detail and strong customer service skills. Your work supports safe travel and accurate licensing across the region. This position evaluates applicants, conducts driving tests and processes identification documents to support safe and accurate licensing.

Requirements

  • One year of experience as a Driver License Examiner Assistant (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years of experience obtaining, evaluating, and providing information to the public.
  • Active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Twenty-one years of age at the time of application.
  • No suspensions or revocations of a driver’s license during the five year period immediately preceding employment.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Undergo and pass a Fingerprint and Name-Based Criminal History Check prior to employment.

Nice To Haves

  • All employees in this job hired after February 28, 2022, are required to obtain an active unrestricted Class M driver’s license within the first six months of employment or before the end of the probationary period and maintain it during employment.

Responsibilities

  • Administer vision, knowledge and road tests to determine driving qualifications
  • Examine applications and identity documents for accuracy and authenticity
  • Check vehicles for proper mechanical condition and required safety features
  • Use system tools to confirm eligibility and prevent fraudulent transactions
  • Provide guidance on licensing procedures, requirements and test results
  • Issue licenses, update records and follow all required policies and regulations
