About The Position

This is a full-time position with the Department of Public Safety - Driver Licensing, located at the Huron Exam Station. The role involves substantial contact with the public, often under stressful conditions, requiring professional and courteous interaction. The position also requires working with a diverse group of people and handling sensitive materials. The job may require travel to other locations, potentially including overnight stays.

Requirements

A High School Diploma is preferred.
Knowledge of South Dakota driver's manual requirements pertaining to the safe operation of motor vehicles.
Knowledge of motor vehicle operation.
Knowledge of computers.
Skill to operate a motor vehicle.
Ability to read and understand complex information and explain that information in common terms.
Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely.
Ability to communicate information relating to state laws, policies, and procedures.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
Ability to administer examinations.
Ability to establish applicant identity and eligibility for ID card, permit, or driver license.
Ability to issue ID cards and licenses to qualified citizens.
Ability to multi-task diverse and complex activities.
Ability to maintain train of thought despite frequent interruptions.
Ability to lift and carry approximately 50 lbs in and out of vehicles and up and down stairs.
Ability to objectively grade an applicant's driving ability.
Ability to conduct assigned duties in a uniform and standardized manner.
Selected candidate is required to have a valid driver's license.
Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation.
All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9.
The State of South Dakota as an employer will be using E-Verify to complete employment eligibility verification upon hire.

Responsibilities

Process license and identification card applications.
Compute and accept license and identification card fees.
Issue receipts and maintain records of transactions.
Administer eye examinations, written exams, and drive/skills tests.
Enter and exit vehicles used in testing.
Direct applicants through the road test route and evaluate their driving performance.
Inform applicants of their performance on drive/skills tests and place appropriate restrictions on licenses.
Provide assistance and information to the public and other agencies via direct contact, telephone, and mail.
Fill in and verify data on license and identification card application forms.
Enter information and compile/tabulate data.
Verify accuracy of computations and entries.
Count and balance cash, credit card, and check payments against program totals, correcting for errors.
Lift and carry approximately 50 lbs in and out of vehicles and up and down stairs during travel.
Operate computers, cameras, printers, and license processing equipment.
Potentially travel to other exam station locations and be away from home 1 or more days in a week.
