This position is responsible for: Driving Responsibilities (50%) Drives a Salvation Army DOT regulated vehicle in order to transport passengers to and from various locations; organizes transportation by most direct routes to save time and fuel consumption. Drives Salvation Army owned DOT regulated vehicle or truck loading and unloading routine pickups and/or deliveries of material, donated or otherwise, to serve production needs of the general operation of corps. Reviews scheduled pick-ups to ensure they are scheduled for the correct day of the week and geographical location. Organizes scheduled pick-ups by most direct routes to save time and fuel consumption. Picks up and delivers miscellaneous items as needed. Drives carefully and observes/complies with all traffic signs and road/weather conditions to ensure the safety of passengers. Parks vehicle in a safe and clearly marked parking space. Locks vehicle doors when vehicle is not in use. Arrives at destination according to schedule or telephones ahead when severe delays occur. Donations Pick-Ups and Deliveries Responsibilities (30%) Lifts and stacks donations in the truck; unloads/loads truck. Maintains good relationships with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army. Coordinates the retrieval, storage, and distribution of food and commodities for the program. Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures. Monitors expiration dates on all food in the pantry; discards outdated or damaged food. Vehicle Maintenance Responsibilities (20%) Ensures the vehicle meets the scheduled maintenance and performs operator’s maintenance in accordance with established standards; cleans all vehicles as needed. Ensures inspections are up to date for DOT vehicles. Fuels vehicle in accordance with state gasoline regulations and The Salvation Army standards. Logs all mileage on standard forms; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same. Other Responsibilities: Assists with custodial duties as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Materials and Equipment: Salvation Army Vehicles Cleaning Equipment Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the assigned geographical area. Knowledge of effective cleaning and sanitizing practices including proper safety precautions. Ability to schedule route in a manner that saves time and gasoline consumption. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers. Ability to follow instructions and work independently. Physical Requirements: Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively. Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions. Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing. Ability to drive a Salvation Army vehicle safely observing all laws, regulations, and policies. Ability to pass DOT requirements to drive a Salvation Army midbus or other DOT vehicle. Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking. Moderate amount of physical effort required associated with lifting, moving, and carrying light to heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) occasionally. Working Conditions: Work requires driving a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
