About The Position

The Driver Apprentice program at WM offers a pathway to becoming a skilled commercial driver. Apprentices will work alongside experienced drivers and trainers to gain the necessary skills and certifications to operate commercial vehicles, perform essential services, and contribute to the company's mission. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to interact with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to official questions, and complete records or reports.
  • Possess a Commercial or Non-commercial Driver's License Class C or D.
  • Successfully complete pre-employment screening, including drug screen and physical.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with a WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer to learn the proper operation of a commercial refuse/recycling vehicle.
  • Operate vehicles in accordance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA, DOT requirements, and all local, state, and federal laws.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and document checks using the standard DVIR.
  • Immediately report all unsafe situations or service-related issues to the Operations Manager or Dispatch.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings.
  • Work closely with the Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
  • Notify the Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
  • Notify the Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including closed or impassable streets, receptacles too heavy to service, or potential safety hazards.
  • Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager.
  • Completely dump all receptacles and leave the customer's location clean and free of debris.
  • Follow route assignments and complete end-of-day documentation and check-out processes.
  • Assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
  • Perform duties as an on-route Helper while obtaining a Commercial Driving Permit and completing training.
  • Manually or mechanically load and empty residential and/or commercial containers into the truck.
  • Operate hoisting devices to lift and empty bins or containers into the truck hopper.
  • Assist the driver with all backing maneuvers while on route.
