About The Position

The Driver Apprentice program at WM (formerly Waste Management) is designed to provide individuals with the training and experience necessary to become a safe and proficient commercial vehicle operator. This role offers a pathway to a stable career with opportunities for growth, including paid tuition for eligible employees and established career progression. WM team members perform essential work and are home every day. This apprenticeship is a crucial step in developing skilled drivers for the company's various lines of business.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age.
Legally eligible to work in the United States.
Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to interact with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to official questions, and complete records or reports.
Possess a Commercial or Non-commercial Driver's License Class C or D upon hire.

Commercial or Non-commercial Driver's License Class C or D with a CDL Permit.

Responsibilities

Partner with a seasoned WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer to learn the proper operation of a commercial refuse/recycling vehicle after obtaining a Commercial Driving Permit.
Operate vehicles in accordance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA, DOT requirements, and all local, state, and federal laws.
Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and document checks using the standard DVIR.
Immediately report all unsafe situations or service-related issues to the Route Manager or Dispatch.
Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings.
Work closely with the Route Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
Notify the Route Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
Notify the Route Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including closed or impassable streets, receptacles too heavy to service, or potential safety hazards.
Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Route Manager.
Completely dump all receptacles and leave the customer's location clean and free of debris.
Follow route assignments and complete end-of-day documentation and check-out processes.
Assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
Perform duties as an on-route Helper while obtaining a Commercial Driving Permit and completing training.
Manually or mechanically load and empty residential and/or commercial containers into the truck.
Operate hoisting devices to lift and empty bins or containers into the truck hopper.
Assist the driver with all backing maneuvers while on route.
