About The Position

The Driver Apprentice program at WM (formerly Waste Management) is designed to provide individuals with the training and experience necessary to become a safe and proficient commercial vehicle operator. This role offers a pathway to a stable career with opportunities for growth, including paid tuition for eligible employees and established career progression. WM team members perform essential work and are home every day. This apprenticeship is a crucial step in developing skilled drivers for the company's various lines of business.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to interact with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to official questions, and complete records or reports.
  • Possess a Commercial or Non-commercial Driver's License Class C or D upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Commercial or Non-commercial Driver's License Class C or D with a CDL Permit.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with a seasoned WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer to learn the proper operation of a commercial refuse/recycling vehicle after obtaining a Commercial Driving Permit.
  • Operate vehicles in accordance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA, DOT requirements, and all local, state, and federal laws.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and document checks using the standard DVIR.
  • Immediately report all unsafe situations or service-related issues to the Route Manager or Dispatch.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings.
  • Work closely with the Route Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
  • Notify the Route Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
  • Notify the Route Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including closed or impassable streets, receptacles too heavy to service, or potential safety hazards.
  • Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Route Manager.
  • Completely dump all receptacles and leave the customer's location clean and free of debris.
  • Follow route assignments and complete end-of-day documentation and check-out processes.
  • Assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
  • Perform duties as an on-route Helper while obtaining a Commercial Driving Permit and completing training.
  • Manually or mechanically load and empty residential and/or commercial containers into the truck.
  • Operate hoisting devices to lift and empty bins or containers into the truck hopper.
  • Assist the driver with all backing maneuvers while on route.
