About The Position

The Driller is responsible for assisting with geotechnical drilling for subsurface investigations. This role involves operating and maintaining drilling equipment, collecting samples, directing junior crew members, and ensuring safe drilling practices. The position also includes setting up, taking down, and transporting drilling rigs and support equipment, maintaining a clean work environment, and handling various drilling materials and tools. Responsibilities extend to equipment maintenance and repair, transporting materials, and performing shop or warehouse duties such as general auto and drill rig maintenance, grinding, welding, cutting metal, and cleaning vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2+ years of related experience such as drilling, construction, or heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical information and instructions.
  • Ability to complete work under a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and rain.
  • Professional-level verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to consistently meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively managing multiple priorities and projects with critical deadlines.
  • Exceptional planning and organization skills.
  • Must be able to meet health and safety requirements for the position.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
  • One year of driving experience in the United States.
  • Able to perform consistent work on a PC.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical activities under varying weather conditions and perform heavy manual labor tasks including the ability to stand for long periods of time and exert up to 50 pounds of force repeatedly throughout the day, as well as 100 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Ability to perform responsibilities outside of the immediate area.

Nice To Haves

  • Higher level of education in a related field may be substituted for experience.
  • Experience within appropriate discipline (geotechnical, environmental, etc.) preferred.
  • Competent with geotechnical/environmental, over-water (if applicable), Shelby tube/SPT, and Piezometer/ well drilling using hollow-stem auger and/or mud rotary techniques.
  • Experience driving two-ton trucks with a standard five or six speed transmission preferred.
  • Valid commercial driver's license applicable to the location and equipment preferred (Class A or greater).
  • Current Washington, Idaho, or Oregon well driller's license preferred.
  • Alternatively, will consider ability to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Consideration will be provided for international driving experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains drilling equipment including CME-75 truck mounted drill rigs.
  • Collects necessary drilling samples.
  • Directs junior drilling crew members, ensuring that all drilling tasks are performed in a safe manner.
  • Assists in setting up, taking down, and transporting geotechnical drilling rigs and support vehicle equipment for truck mounted highway rigs.
  • Cleans drill rig area and keeps it clear of safety hazards.
  • Maintains clean exploration department shop environment.
  • Handles, sorts, and moves drilling tools, pipe, cement, bentonite, and other materials.
  • Manipulates sections of auger, pipe, or drill stem during drilling.
  • Maintains drilling equipment and repairs machinery as required.
  • Transports materials and well service equipment.
  • Performs shop or warehouse duties such as general auto maintenance and repairs, drill rig maintenance and repair, grinding and helping with welding and cutting metal, cleaning, and washing trucks and drill rig equipment.
  • Conducting work (office and field) in a safe manner.
  • Proactively identifying and resolving potential safety hazards in a timely manner.
  • Conducting safety briefings as required by the project.
  • Wearing appropriate safety equipment when working in the field.
  • Completing all required health and safety training prior to beginning field work.
