About The Position

S&ME is looking for a full-time Driller to join our Field Exploration team in Greensboro, North Carolina. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in hands-on work, and is hard-working and reliable. S&ME has a 50-year history of delivering innovative geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction material testing, growing into a trusted partner across various industries. As a Driller, you will support and coordinate drilling operations with minimal supervision from a senior driller, oversee and mentor a team of driller assistants and drillers, and ensure the use of the best drilling techniques and equipment for each project. Responsibilities include mobilizing drill equipment, ordering project materials (with management approval), and maintaining, cleaning, and calibrating testing and inspection equipment. We value safety, quality workmanship, and integrity. This role requires dependability, enjoyment of working outdoors year-round, and openness to travel (with paid hotels and per diem).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 3 years of Geotechnical and/or Environmental Drilling experience
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) in English
  • Understand and can perform routine vehicle and equipment maintenance
  • Working knowledge of multiple drilling methods, including hollow stem auger, mud rotary, and rock coring techniques
  • Willing and Able to: Perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as: Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain, Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day, Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Candidates must comply with our Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Only candidates with valid employment eligibility (I-9) will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Manage operations for assigned projects by overseeing lower-level drillers.
  • Review field logs, samples, and data from subordinate drill personnel.
  • Communicate with management and technical staff.
  • Oversee vehicle and equipment maintenance to ensure good working conditions and determine the need for equipment.
  • Assure that all drilling functions, including quality control, quality assurance, and verification, are performed per the standard drilling methods, project specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Coordinate and oversee the daily activities on medium to large projects of assigned driller assistants.
  • Communicate field conditions and job progress to management and professional staff daily.
  • Support and coordinate drilling operations with minimal supervision from a senior driller.
  • Oversee and mentor a team of driller assistants and drillers.
  • Ensure the use of the best drilling techniques and equipment for each project.
  • Mobilize drill equipment.
  • Order project materials (with management approval).
  • Maintain, clean, and calibrate testing and inspection equipment.
