About The Position

Under general supervision, the Drainage Technician I operates light to medium-sized vehicles and equipment within the Drainage Division of the Public Works Department. This role involves performing construction, maintenance, and drainage system operations, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and assisting other team members as needed. Essential duties and responsibilities may include operating light to medium sized equipment in the performance of a variety of construction, maintenance, and other work in combination with assigned vehicle’s operation or mode of function and performance light to heavy physical labor. Typical work will be operating a mower and other light equipment. Ensure safety rules and regulations are followed. Performs safety inspections of vehicles and equipment. Provides assistance to other drivers as necessary. Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; AND one year of heavy equipment and vehicle operations experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of operations of motorized construction and maintenance equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of construction, maintenance and repair practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of water and sewer system operations.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of personal computer and various software applications.
  • Skill in handling situations requires diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
  • Skill in providing efficient customer service.
  • Skill in understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating various motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in using various hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
