About The Position

The Drain Maintenance Operator position is a great job for anyone who enjoys working outdoors, is skilled with using outdoor maintenance tools and equipment, and works well in a team atmosphere. The selected candidate will work closely with the Drain Commissioner, Chief Deputy Drain Commissioner, and most often with the Drain Maintenance Supervisor. A good deal of physical work is involved with this position. Ideal candidates will have the necessary skill sets, but there will be opportunities to learn on the job. A valid driver’s license and Class A CDL are required. Newaygo County offers a generous fringe benefit package which includes retirement and health insurance with no payroll deduction. Additionally, longevity pay increases are available beyond the top hourly rate as listed above.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or equivalent is required.
  • Must obtain a State certification for soil erosion and sedimentation control and State certification for commercial pesticide application within six (6) months of employment.
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver’s license and Class A CDL is required.
  • All offers of employment are contingent upon passing a background check, physical, and drug screening which includes marijuana.

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years of previous maintenance, excavating or construction experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates excavators, tractors, brush mowers, and spray equipment to maintain drains, right-of-ways, and lake level control structures.
  • Cuts, trims and sprays trees, brush and other weeds with power and hand equipment.
  • Removes brush, trees and other debris from drains and lake level control structures.
  • Operates chain saw and other power equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs of departmental vehicles, trailers and equipment, which includes changing oil and filters, changing/repairing tires, welding and mild fabrication, changing blades, etc.
  • Installs and maintains culverts, crossings, drain tiles, manholes, and other infrastructure.
  • Ability to determine appropriate elevations for proper installation and maintenance related to drains.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and routine repairs on various dams and pumping facilities under the control and jurisdiction of the Drain Commissioner.
  • In conjunction with the Drain Maintenance Supervisor, inspects soil erosion permit sites and drain projects to ensure compliance with soil erosion and sedimentation control regulations.
  • May serve in an “on-call” basis for evening or week-end maintenance requests.
  • Installs and maintains soil erosion control measures such as rock rip rap, silt fence, mulch blanket, etc.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Drain Commissioner and Drain Maintenance Supervisor.
  • May be required to provide assistance to other departments and entities.
