About The Position

The Drafter / CAD Technician supports Murphy Maritime’s marine construction, fabrication, permitting, and project development operations by creating accurate 2D drawings, 3D models, fabrication details, layout drawings, and 3D-printed components or prototypes. This position converts field measurements, sketches, redlines, customer concepts, and internal direction into practical working designs used for estimating, permitting, fabrication, and field installation.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or comparable CAD software.
  • Experience with 3D modeling software such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks, SketchUp, Inventor, Rhino, or similar.
  • Experience operating 3D printers.
  • Ability to take precise measurements and transfer them into drawings, models, and working designs.
  • Ability to read and create technical drawings, dimensions, layouts, and basic construction details.
  • Basic understanding of measurement, scale, geometry, materials, and construction layout.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, accuracy, and revision control.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and drawing revisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with office staff, fabricators, project managers, and field crews.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in marine construction, dock construction, structural steel, fabrication, welding support, construction drafting, or architectural/engineering drafting.
  • Experience preparing drawings for permitting, regulatory submittals, customer proposals, fabrication, or field installation.
  • Familiarity with Idaho lakefront permitting, encroachment permits, ordinary high water marks, ordinary low water marks, littoral lines, or submerged land lease exhibits.
  • Experience with CNC, laser cutting, plasma cutting, or other digital fabrication workflows.
  • Experience with BuilderTrend, Sortly, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, or similar project/documentation tools.
  • Understanding of construction sequencing, fabrication methods, and practical field installation concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and revise 2D AutoCAD drawings for docks, gangways, steel components, pile layouts, framing plans, site plans, shop drawings, and related marine construction elements.
  • Develop 3D models of structures, brackets, assemblies, specialty parts, templates, and project components.
  • Take accurate field, shop, and yard measurements and integrate them into working drawings, models, and designs.
  • Use measuring and layout tools proficiently, including tape measures, calipers, compasses, protractors, squares, levels, angle finders, and related tools.
  • Convert sketches, verbal direction, redlines, photos, and field notes into clear technical drawings.
  • Support permitting, proposals, fabrication, and construction planning by preparing drawings, exhibits, layouts, details, and revisions.
  • Operate and maintain company 3D printers, including preparing print files, selecting settings, troubleshooting print issues, and tracking supplies.
  • Create 3D-printed prototypes, templates, jigs, mockups, small replacement parts, scale models, or design aids when appropriate.
  • Prepare fabrication support materials such as cut lists, hole layouts, bracket details, part drawings, and assembly references.
  • Maintain organized digital files for CAD drawings, 3D models, print files, revisions, measurements, photos, and project documents.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining standard parts, reusable details, templates, and drawing libraries.
  • Communicate with Project Developers, Project Managers, Superintendents, welders, dock builders, and field crews to confirm dimensions, design intent, and construction needs.
