About The Position

The Dosimetrist provides dosimetry services as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist for the treatment of cancer patients. Has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment. Cognizant of procedures commonly used in brachytherapy, education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distributions and dose calculations in collaboration with the Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist. Employees or candidates in this job must be eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Dosimetrist examination and must receive this specific credential within one (1) year upon hire.

Requirements

• Associate's Degree in Dosimetry
• Must be eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Dosimetrist examination and must receive this specific credential within one (1) year upon hire.
• Certification Name: Certified Medical Dosimetrist
• Issuer: Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board
• Licensure: Certification
• Must be able to operate the Radiation Oncology systems.
• Must be able to recognize when equipment is not performing correctly.
• Knowledge of Radiation Oncology planning systems and equipment operations.

Responsibilities

• Develops treatment plans in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist's prescription and instructions.
• Uses computer planning for treatment calculations for external beam treatment and brachytherapy planning under the direction of the Physicist.
• Verifies the accuracy of all calculations, mathematical additions and computer plans in patient chart on a regular basis.
• Performs the planning and the fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, wedges and other beam modifications needed for radiation treatments.
• Meets requirements for mandatory hospital in-services and attends department meetings.
• Meets requirements for Continuing Medical Education.
• Trains/educates radiation therapy students on dosimetry rotation.
• Assists other therapists on treatment machines and in the simulation room as needed.
