As a Dosimetrist in Radiation Oncology, the primary responsibilities involve performing CT simulation and treatment planning using 3-dimensional computer-assisted techniques. Under the guidance of a staff physicist, the role includes conducting general patient dosimetry, incorporating hand calculations for external beam therapy, and calculating doses for irregularly shaped fields. Here, the Dosimetrist Team uses the following software, but not limited to: Aria, Eclipse, and AutoContouring/ClearCheck. As for hardware, this would include: Varian Truebeam v.4.1

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemical, Physical, Biological, or other related major
  • 3 years as Certified Dosimetrist
  • Certification from Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB)

Responsibilities

  • Perform CT simulation and treatment planning using 3-dimensional computer-assisted techniques.
  • Conduct general patient dosimetry.
  • Incorporate hand calculations for external beam therapy.
  • Calculate doses for irregularly shaped fields.
  • Independently assess the necessary dosimetry and physics requirements for fulfilling the physician’s prescription.
  • Recommend treatment strategies to the physician.
  • Perform 2, 3-D, and IMRT treatment planning.
  • Perform treatment planning for HDR and interstitial brachytherapy.
  • Digitize and import all beam shaping blocks at the completion of the simulation process.
  • Contour normal tissues according to physician instructions.
