SALARY RANGE: $80,000.00 - $105,000.00 THIS POSITION IS TIME-LIMITED, GRANT FUNDED, FULL-TIME. FUNDING FOR THIS POSITION WILL END ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2026. Purpose: For the past 20 years, this long-standing position has offered a unique opportunity to serve as a critical resource for prosecutors, law enforcement, and allied professionals across North Carolina, enhancing the capability of the State’s prosecutors to prosecute violence against women criminal cases effectively. Your duty station will be based on agency needs and your location. This position requires travel across North Carolina to assist prosecutors in various districts, making adaptability and independence essential. As the Domestic and Sexual Violence Resource Prosecutor, you’ll be a vital partner in empowering prosecutors and allied professionals with the tools, training, and guidance they need to maneuver through the Court System effectively.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and an active license to practice law in North Carolina.
  • Knowledge of: North Carolina statutes, common law, and case law; judicial procedures and rules of evidence; case, statutory, and common law; legal research methods, techniques, sources, databases, and other research tools; the operations of the NC court system; and ethical and professional standards of conduct.
  • Skill in: interpreting and applying criminal laws to information, evidence, and other data; using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of case facts; researching and identifying precedents in case law; utilizing electronic legal research and online systems; organizing work; setting priorities; meeting critical deadlines; and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
  • Ability to: analyze facts and apply applicable law to those facts; conduct legal research; plan, develop, and execute an effective litigation strategy to achieve desired results; prepare, organize, and conduct witness examinations; deliver opening statements, closing arguments, and evidentiary objections; express complex legal concepts and related facts clearly and concisely; argue clearly, logically, and persuasively; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and other participants in the criminal justice process; recognize and solve problems; produce legal interpretations in quickly and responsively for court officials; write reports, motions, briefs, and other legal documents; deal tactfully with sensitive situations; communicate both orally and in writing; and work independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive understanding of federal, state, and constitutional law, especially regarding violence against women cases.
  • Familiarity with the NC General Statutes, rules of evidence, and the NC court system.
  • Proficiency in legal research, strategic case analysis, and complex trial preparation.

  • Attended an instructor development training program.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a resource to prosecutors, law enforcement, medical professionals, mental health professionals, victim advocacy agencies, and other violence against women professionals in the State of North Carolina.
  • Provide expert legal advice and technical assistance on violence against women cases to prosecutors across the state.
  • Serve as lead or associate counsel, prepare and present cases in court, and represent the state in violence against women cases as assigned.
  • Support pre-trial investigations, including evidence gathering and strategic case development.
  • Prepare articles, legal memoranda, and other resources for statewide distribution on current violence against women legal issues.
  • Assess training needs, design tailored programs, and deliver high-impact training to prosecutors, law enforcement, and allied professionals.
  • Offer legal research, charging guidance, and support for pre-trial, trial, and appellate strategies related to violence against women cases.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including the social workers, medical professionals, mental health professionals, and other violence against women professionals.
  • Prepare and publish articles for our statewide magazine, sharing best practices and emerging issues with your peers.
  • Stay on the cutting edge of evidence-gathering techniques and emerging technologies to support law enforcement and prosecutors in the courtroom.
  • Serve as a liaison and develop and maintain a rapport with the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault, NC Domestic Violence Coalition, Wake County Domestic Violence Task Force, the State Bureau of Investigation, and other violence against women organizations on issues related to violence against women.
