About The Position

The American Bar Association is looking for an Intern to join our team. Our company is working on exciting new developments and will offer an educational experience. The educational internship, while being unpaid, provides invaluable education. The internship is similar to training that would be given in an educational environment. You’ll gain valuable resume experience and the necessary knowledge and skills to perform professionally. The intern will observe, gain exposure to various resources, and participate in ongoing training. Our intern will be part of our Founded in 1994, the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence is the only national organization that focuses exclusively on improving the legal response to domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The Commission addresses the acute need to increase the number of well-trained and supported attorneys providing representation to survivors by: 1) providing in-person, web-based, and telephonic technical assistance and continuing legal education opportunities for attorneys, law students, and allied legal advocates; 2) advocating for full-funding for the Violence Against Women Act and other federal legislation increasing and improving services and support for victims of domestic violence; and collaborating with other ABA entities and national organizations to improve the systemic legal response to domestic and sexual violence. The intern will be responsible for conducting legal research, drafting written materials, and assisting staff in developing the Commission’s library of training resources for attorneys representing victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The intern will engage in researching relevant laws, policies, and best practices, as well as producing educational content and resource materials. Ultimately, the intern will receive an enriching educational experience to help. Ultimately, the intern will receive an enriching educational experience to help develop competencies in legal research and analysis, professional writing, and the ability to translate complex legal concepts into accessible training materials. The intern will also gain practical insight into victim advocacy and legal training by observing and participating in Commission-hosted trainings.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be 18 years old or older and: currently enrolled in (or in a deferred enrollment/gap year status recognized by) a post-secondary academic institution (i.e. undergraduate, graduate) and in a program/area of study directly related to the purpose of the internship program; or a recent (i.e. up to one (1) year) graduate of a post-secondary academic institution (i.e. undergraduate, graduate) with a degree in a program/area of study directly related to the purpose of the internship program.
  • Relevant areas of study may include, but are not limited to: Social Work, Criminal Justice or Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, Women’s or Gender Studies, Political Science, Public Policy, Legal Studies or Pre-Law, Counseling, Human Services, or related fields.
  • Students from other disciplines with a demonstrated interest in domestic and sexual violence prevention, victim advocacy, public policy, or community engagement.
