About The Position

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is currently hiring for a Special Agent position within the Law Enforcement Division, Western Region, Investigations Unit. The BasePoint for this vacancy is the Christiansburg Customer Service Center (CSC). The Special Agent (SA) supports DMV administrations and is responsible for providing services to the public and motor vehicle dealers. This position is at the forefront of agency efforts to promote compliance and enforce laws that encourage a level playing field within the transportation and motor fuel industries, protect consumers of transportation services, and ensure fuels tax revenue owed to Virginia is collected in a fair and impartial manner. This position also ensures compliance within the driving training school industry. This SA is assigned to special enforcement activities incumbent of investigations operations, safety details in support of the agency mission. With DMV’s Law Enforcement Division, there is opportunity to break out of the daily routine for specialized assignments to include Executive Protection, threat assessment, internal and external investigations, prospective employee backgrounds, instructional assignments and opportunities to serve on work groups and boards that work to strengthen the overall mission and objectives of the agency. Additionally, the law enforcement division offers a proactive path to professional development and promotional opportunities. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, serves approximately 6.2 million licensed drivers and ID card holders with over 8.4 million registered vehicles. In addition, DMV serves many businesses, including dealers, fuel tax customers, rental companies, driving schools, other state agencies, local governments, and non-profit organizations. Requirements

  • Knowledge of the proper use and application of law enforcement equipment, including firearms and less-lethal force devices (e.g., pepper spray, baton)
  • Skilled in using personal computers, peripheral devices, wireless telecommunication devices, Microsoft Office, and IT systems relevant to law enforcement
  • Knowledge of the rules of evidence, investigative principles, procedures for issuing summonses and serving warrants, and best practices for law enforcement duties
  • Knowledge of state and federal motor vehicle and criminal laws
  • Skilled in using law enforcement equipment such as firearms, less lethal devices, and intermediary force weapons, and applying exceptional officer safety techniques and procedures
  • Skilled in safely operating vehicles under various conditions, including emergencies, and using communications equipment like radios and mobile data computers
  • Skilled in applying exceptional officer safety techniques and procedures
  • Ability to investigate complex crimes and civil offenses, exercise sound judgment, and make decisions consistent with agency policies
  • Ability to identify and analyze relevant information, adapt to changes, apply problem-oriented policing principles, and handle stressful situations professionally
  • MUST possess DCJS certification as a law enforcement officer
  • MUST comply with statutorily specified minimum qualifications for law enforcement officers (§15.2-1705, Code of Virginia), including a satisfactory criminal history records check, background investigation, and physical examination
  • MUST possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record that reflects a sense of safety and responsibility
  • Willing to work irregular hours, travel overnight, and endure personal risks
  • Must reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and within a 50 mile or 75-minute drive time of assigned BasePoint, per agency policy
  • Must be willing to establish residency within 90-days to satisfy policy requirement
  • Must complete a medical and psychological evaluation upon selection
  • Consent to a driver's history and criminal background check
  • A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required on the selected applicant(s)
