About The Position

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is seeking an Assistant Special Agent in Charge (Sergeant) for its Northern Region, Investigations Unit, based at the Harrisonburg Customer Service Center (CSC). This position, equivalent to the rank of Sergeant, supports administration by providing daily guidance and direction to special agents involved in investigative operations at the regional level. The ASAC serves as a crucial communication link between field agents, Senior Special Agents (SSA), Special Agents (SA), and the Special Agent in Charge (LT/SAC), to whom this position directly reports. Responsibilities include conducting, directing, and monitoring special assignments such as enforcement operations, safety details, and investigations as directed by the LT/SAC. The ASAC collaborates with the LT/SAC to set performance expectations, address employee relations, monitor agent performance, evaluate individual performance, and foster career development to identify future leaders. Additionally, the incumbent will handle sensitive or complex special cases assigned by the LT/SAC. The DMV's Law Enforcement Division offers opportunities for specialized assignments including Executive Protection, threat assessment, internal and external investigations, prospective employee backgrounds, and instructional roles, as well as participation in work groups and boards. Requirements

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle laws, tax laws, search and seizure laws, criminal procedure, laws of arrest, and applicable court precedents.
  • In-depth knowledge of laws, regulations, policies affecting law enforcement, and best practices for managing personnel and operations.
  • Knowledge of the rules of evidence, investigative principles, procedures for issuing summonses and serving warrants, and best practices for law enforcement duties.
  • Knowledge of state and federal motor vehicle and criminal laws.
  • Skilled in using law enforcement equipment such as firearms, less lethal devices, and intermediary force weapons, and applying exceptional officer safety techniques and procedures.
  • Skilled in safely operating vehicles under various conditions, including emergencies, and using communications equipment like radios and mobile data computers.
  • Skilled in using personal computers, peripheral devices, wireless telecommunication devices, Microsoft Office, and IT systems relevant to law enforcement.
  • Skilled in writing various types of reports and preparing briefings on crime trends and intelligence.
  • Skilled in collaborating with law enforcement partners and stakeholders, organizing crime intelligence, conducting daily briefings, and the latest intelligence resources available.
  • Ability to guide, train, evaluate performance, and coach/mentor sworn personnel and apply laws and procedures.
  • Ability to investigate complex crimes and civil offenses, exercise sound judgment, and make decisions consistent with agency policies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, and read, interpret, and explain complex laws and procedures.
  • Ability to identify and analyze relevant information, adapt to changes, apply problem-oriented policing principles, and handle stressful situations professionally.
  • MUST possess DCJS certification as a law enforcement officer.
  • MUST comply with statutorily specified minimum qualifications for law enforcement officers (§15.2-1705, Code of Virginia), including a satisfactory criminal history records check, background investigation, and physical examination.
  • MUST possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record that reflects a sense of safety and responsibility.
  • Willing to work irregular hours, travel overnight, and endure personal risks.
  • Must reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and within a 50 mile or 75-minute drive time of assigned BasePoint, per agency policy.
  • Must be willing to establish residency within 90-days to satisfy policy requirement.
  • Must complete a medical and psychological evaluation upon selection.
  • All applicants for employment must consent to a driver's history and criminal background check.
  • A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required on the selected applicant(s).
