About The Position

The DMD Electrical I&C Engineer is part of the Division Managed Design (DMD) Field Design Support (FDS) team at the Y-12 site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. FDS engineers respond to urgent production-facility needs and support System Engineering when designs need modification or correction, ranging from replacing obsolete components to reverse engineering failed legacy equipment. The work spans site buildings, facilities, systems, and utilities, with designs often implemented within days or weeks. It includes frequent field walkdowns as needed, close collaboration with other engineering disciplines, and the application of codes and standards in challenging situations. The engineer documents existing configurations and issues, defines requirements with stakeholders, develops end-state documentation, researches and specifies equipment, and provides troubleshooting and assessment expertise. Electrical and instrumentation and controls (I&C) work may include applying NFPA codes and UL standards, PLC and HMI programming, developing or contributing to diagrams and schedules, arc-flash assessments, and protection and control schematics. The role follows a 4-10 schedule with a four-week balancing period and offers opportunities for technical leadership, career advancement, and professional development. The position requires a qualifying engineering or physical science education and experience, or a master's or doctoral degree in engineering or physical science. A minimum GPA applies up to four years after graduation. A Q security clearance is required, though candidates may be considered regardless of current clearance status; the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required. The position may involve entry into Material Access Areas and participation in the Human Reliability Program, including a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and potentially a polygraph. Candidates accepting an offer must pass a pre-placement physical, drug screening, and background investigation. U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance applicants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Physical Science (including Chemistry, Physics, or related) from an EAC/ABET-accredited U.S. program or a designated equivalent, and 2 years of relevant experience; OR a master's degree in Engineering or Physical Science; OR a Ph.D. in Engineering or Physical Science.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 for a bachelor's degree, 3.3 for a master's degree, or 3.5 for a Ph.D., when the GPA requirement applies up to four years after graduation. Beyond four years, engineering experience supersedes GPA as a hiring requirement.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance applicants.
  • Successful candidates must pass a pre-placement physical, drug screening, and background investigation.
  • Ability to conduct field walkdowns and work across site facilities, systems, and utilities.
  • Technical capability in electrical and/or instrumentation and controls engineering, including relevant design documentation and troubleshooting.

Nice To Haves
