Our Values Collaboration Developmental Approach Transparency Equity GRADE 19 LOCATION OF POSITION Lower Eastern Shore Children's Center 405 Naylor Mill Road Salisbury, MD 21801 Main Purpose of Job A DJS Assistant Superintendent Residential Facility I is the first managerial level of work overseeing the daily administration, management and overall operation of a large Department of Juvenile Services facility. Employees in this classification function as deputies to Facility Superintendents and assume full responsibility for the facility or facilities in the absence of the Superintendent. Employees in this classification manage the work of employees providing services to resident youth through subordinate DJS Supervisors. Employees may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays and may be subject to call-in based on staffing needs or emergency situations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission Regulation.
  • Two years of experience supervising staff in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for at-risk youth.
  • Candidates appointed to positions in this classification must obtain certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
  • Employees assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Candidates who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS staff required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate within 365 days of initial appointment or placement in this classification according to Code of Maryland Regulations 12.10.01.03.
  • Employees are required to maintain certification while employed.

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one year of the required general experience.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to two years of the required general experience.
  • Candidate will be flexible with work schedule and have the ability to work evening hours.
  • Candidate will have the ability to teach, train and build effective teams within the facility.
  • Candidate will be knowledgeable.
  • Candidate will be safety and security-minded.
  • Candidate will be able to prioritize workflow to meet deadlines to implement systems and schedules.
  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in the social or behavioral sciences or criminal justice from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred.
