About The Position

The Environmental Manager is a key leadership role at the Chiquita Canyon Landfill, responsible for district-level environmental compliance in a highly regulated operating environment. This position is essential to maintaining regulatory confidence, supporting safe and reliable operations, and ensuring Waste Connections meets its environmental commitments. This is a hands-on, field-focused role suited for an environmental professional with 7+ years of experience who excels at independent decision-making, regulatory interpretation, and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental or Civil Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of environmental compliance experience in a heavily regulated industry (waste industry experience preferred).
  • Proven leadership skills with experience guiding technical or operational staff.
  • Strong public speaking and regulatory communication skills, with experience presenting technical information to regulators, community groups, and leadership teams.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and evaluate analytical data and laboratory reports (sampling experience a plus).
  • Strong working knowledge of California environmental regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical reporting and regulator correspondence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and environmental data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently, lead through influence, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver’s license; willingness to travel up to 5% and work occasional weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day environmental leadership grounded in expert knowledge of permits, compliance orders, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in cross-functional leadership meetings, delivering environmental updates, risk assessments, and informed recommendations that guide site priorities.
  • Interpret, track, and implement site permits, regulatory orders, and compliance commitments to maintain operational continuity.
  • Direct environmental compliance activities, including inspections, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting.
  • Serve as a primary regulatory liaison; lead inspections, manage follow-up actions, and prepare official responses, in coordination with the local leadership team.
  • Analyze groundwater, stormwater, and wastewater data, preparing technical summaries and regulatory reports.
  • Oversee leachate trucking operations, ensuring compliant routing, manifests, and disposal.
  • Develop and improve SOPs, training programs, and environmental documentation.
  • Manage consultants and contractors to ensure quality, consistency, and timely deliverables.
  • Forecast environmental compliance costs and support budgeting and financial planning.
  • Perform regular fieldwork, including exposure to landfill gas, odors, noise, chemicals, and varying weather conditions.
