About The Position

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is seeking applications for a District 7 Fisheries Biologist (Conservation Biologist II) within the Inland Fisheries Division. This division is responsible for managing, conserving, enhancing, and restoring the state’s freshwater fishes, mollusks, crayfish, and their aquatic habitats through research, management, hatchery operations, and habitat conservation. The District 7 Fisheries Biologist will conduct biological surveys, fisheries research, and habitat enhancement activities. This role involves providing technical assistance and informational services to various entities, responding to fish kill emergencies, and undertaking special assignments as directed. The position also acts as a liaison between the Commission and the public, private organizations, and other public agencies, primarily within the 11 counties of Commission District 7. This role supports the day-to-day activities of the District Fisheries Biologist I and may involve supervising conservation technicians or temporary employees. The position is HOME-BASED, requiring the employee to provide a compliant home office space within the WRC - District 7 area. This is a Monday-Friday position, working 40 hours per week, with frequent travel, including occasional overnight stays and travel to the WRC-HQ in Raleigh, NC.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of North Carolina’s freshwater fisheries, fisheries management principles, and techniques used in sampling aquatic resources and their habitats.
  • Working knowledge of ecological principles and habitat conservation practices.
  • Ability to design, conduct, and analyze fisheries surveys.
  • Ability to interpret field investigations.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Considerable skills and abilities in operating and maintaining field and laboratory equipment used in fisheries science.
  • Ability to function independently for work planning, scheduling, procurement, and personnel management.
  • Valid NC Driver’s License required within 90 days of employment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife or fisheries management, fisheries science, zoology, or a biological science, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts biological surveys, fisheries research, and habitat enhancement activities.
  • Provides technical assistance and informational services to government agencies, universities, and individuals.
  • Responds to emergency situations such as fish kills.
  • Completes special assignments as directed by regional and Division staff.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Commission and the public, private organizations, and other public agencies.
  • Supports the day-to-day activities of the District Fisheries Biologist I.
  • May involve the supervision of one or more conservation technicians or temporary employees.
