About The Position

Dominion Energy is seeking a Material Engineer for distribution automation and related equipment, including padmount switches, padmount reclosers, overhead reclosers, and automation equipment with control relays and communication capabilities. This role involves setting specifications, sourcing, and testing new equipment in collaboration with vendors and the supply chain team. The position also covers material engineering for underground cable accessories, connectors, manholes, vaults, conduit, and splice boxes. Responsibilities include approving new vendors, developing/revising material specifications, and performing root cause analysis on failed equipment in both field and lab environments. The company utilizes a variety of manufacturers for its distribution system, over 80% of which operates at 34.5 kv. Travel to manufacturing plants, utility group meetings, trade shows, and conferences is included. These positions are for mid to upper-level engineers with a preference for electrical utility or related material experience.

Requirements

  • Engineer: 2+ years of related experience
  • Senior Engineer: 5+ years of related experience
  • Staff Engineer: 8+ years of experience
  • Knowledge and application of engineering theories, principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
  • Developmental experience in a professional engineering position.
  • Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality, and/or ingenuity.
  • Understanding and application of configuration management.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g., Matlab, Excel, etc.).
  • Planning, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills.
  • Effective decision-making skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (including technical writing).
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Ability to work effectively independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to process information quickly and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • For Nuclear employees: Must have at least one year of Nuclear power experience.
  • In unmanned systems, Engineers must have ability to hoist, lift, and maneuver equipment using proper safety techniques.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, and maintain awkward or restricted positions as tasks require.
  • Ability to remain standing for prolonged periods and perform work while on their feet throughout the shift.
  • Ability to enter, work within, and exit confined spaces in accordance with safety procedures and applicable regulations.
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program or equivalent.
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory.
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited.
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
  • Bachelor’s In Engineering (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree).

Nice To Haves

  • Some electrical utility or material experience in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Set specifications for distribution automation equipment, including padmount switches, padmount reclosers, overhead reclosers, and automation equipment with control relays and communication capabilities.
  • Source and test new equipment and automation for the distribution system in collaboration with vendors and the supply chain team.
  • Develop or revise specifications for underground cable accessories, associated connectors, manholes, vaults, conduit, and splice boxes.
  • Approve new vendors for underground equipment.
  • Perform root cause analysis on failed distribution automation equipment and underground equipment.
  • Work with vendors on necessary modifications to equipment based on failure analysis.
  • Evaluate the performance of existing equipment and perform auditing of manufacturers.
  • Travel to manufacturing plants, utility group meetings, trade shows, and conferences.
