About The Position

This position is for a Distribution Operator ECC within the NY-Binghamton ECC. The role involves coordinating and creating switching for the outage of distribution lines and equipment, operating electric distribution facilities, and dispatching outage and trouble notifications. The operator will perform typical maintenance and repairs to ensure service continuity in cooperation with other operating personnel. The role also includes issuing switching orders, ensuring adherence to safety procedures, analyzing distribution circuits, and initiating actions to minimize service interruptions. The operator will monitor electric distribution devices, log data, update system diagrams, and dispatch crews via the Outage Management System. Additionally, the role requires recognizing and reporting unusual conditions and performing other related duties as needed.

Requirements

  • BA in Electrical Engineering / AAS in Electrical Engineering Technology or a passing score on a test designed by the Company or a provider approved by the Company.
  • Successful completion of Company administered aptitude test.
  • Will be expected to absorb Company training in Distribution Operating work, measured by appropriate job knowledge tests. This includes general knowledge of the operation of generating stations, transmission and distribution lines, substations, gas distribution systems, geography of Company territory, Company Safety Rules, Switching and Tagging Procedures , protection systems, and standard procedures for gas operations.
  • Normal health, physique and use of senses as indicated by passing the required physical examination given by a Company physician, including color perception.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test and be enrolled in the random drug testing program.
  • Must possess analytical ability and emotional stability.
  • Must be neat and orderly in work and preparation of records.
  • Must be able to receive and transmit orders and instructions in such a manner as to inspire respect and confidence.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates/ creates switching for the outage of distribution lines and equipment for testing, Under directive supervision coordinates/operates the electric distribution facilities and dispatches electric and gas outage and trouble notifications. Typical maintenance and repairs to assure continuity of service in cooperation with Section Operators and Division operating personnel.
  • Issues switching orders for de-energizing, grounding, tagging and re-energizing distribution facilities.
  • Assures rigid observance of Electric Switching and Tagging Procedures and standard procedures for gas operations.
  • Performs required analyses of distribution circuits to ensure proper distribution circuit operation in real-time and for contingency conditions.
  • Makes initial analysis of electric outage/trouble and initiates actions to minimize interruptions.
  • Oversees overall distribution switching operations in a lead role when assigned.
  • Operates and monitors supervisory controlled electric distribution devices.
  • Logs data and keeps records up to date.
  • Updates system diagrams and programs to conform with current field conditions.
  • Receives electric/gas trouble and outage calls and dispatches crews via the Outage Management System.
  • Recognizes unusual conditions and situations and informs responsible Corporate or Division operating personnel.
  • Performs other related or less skilled work as required.
