About The Position

Hydro Ottawa is seeking a Distribution Long-Term Planning Engineer, a strategic thinker who can take initiatives from concept to completion and engineer the way to a smart energy future. This role drives the future readiness and grid resilience of Hydro Ottawa’s distribution system. This role oversees long-term strategies, capacity expansion, regional growth trend analysis, and capital investment frameworks. By leveraging data-driven analytics, this role ensures that system planning decisions—from load forecasting to Non-Wires Solutions—are proactive and aligned with corporate objectives. The DLTP Engineer provides essential technical governance and investment justification to ensure that the 5-year Distribution System Plans and all regulatory requirements are robust, cost-effective and seamlessly executed in alignment with strategic objectives.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university
  • Professional Engineer, licensed or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably Google Workspace
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in long-term system planning, project management, and regional coordination framework considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Power Engineering Software tools such as CYME, PiVision, and GIS considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Ontario’s energy sector and regulatory framework (OEB, IESO) considered an asset
  • Experience with Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems considered an asset
  • Knowledge of asset management frameworks such as ISO 55000 and ISO 9001 considered an asset
  • Experience in Lean Six Sigma or other continuous improvement frameworks considered an asset
  • English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Annual System Peak Reviews and N-1 Contingency Analysis to establish the system baseline and maintain long-term reliability.
  • Develop and update 10-to-20-year long-term load forecasting annually; identify 5-to-10-year system capacity needs and maintain the 5-year Distribution System Plans.
  • Formulate overarching Planning Guidelines, design flexible connection frameworks, and execute Non-Wires Solutions scoping initiatives.
  • Optimize annual capital projects and program plans by managing the Asset Investment Planning tool and leading the development and maintenance of value frameworks.
  • Determine and scope capital projects addressing long-term strategic system needs, and performing comprehensive assessments to justify system investments.
  • Collaborate actively in regional planning process working groups with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and Hydro One, and partner with municipal bodies on Community Energy Plans.
  • Oversee the closure of Connection Cost and Recovery Agreements with the transmission system operator, and support with load forecasting and regulatory interpretation.
  • Drive the technical development and data quality assurance of the Distribution System Plan and associated metrics to support Ontario Energy Board (OEB) Rate Applications.
  • Support the establishment of technical standards, criteria, and guidelines for integrating new technologies, with a specific focus on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Distributed Energy Resources.
  • Provide technical support for the execution of in-flight major multi-year projects (station upgrades, new station builds, and transmission upgrades), contributing to engineering standards and policies.
  • Represent Hydro Ottawa in external working groups or conferences, and provide technical input on directives or regulatory reviews from the OEB, Electricity Distribution Association, and IESO.
  • Participate in Hydro Ottawa’s Electricity Emergency Response Program (EERP) including potential after-hours and or on-call responsibilities, as required.
  • Lead special projects and perform other related duties as required.
