Reporting to Team Lead, Distribution, the Distribution Designer (Intermediate) is responsible for designing multiple overhead and underground distribution projects in a fast-paced environment. They will be responsible for the accuracy, quality and constructability of designs, calculations and estimates for electrical utility projects of all sizes. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required to progress designs through all project stages. The Distribution Designer contributes to bid proposals, estimates and material calculations and is responsible for the accuracy of quoted work. The Distribution Designer is responsible for handover of high-quality design packages to the client or project team, on schedule, and are responsible for resolving design related issues and field level questions while projects are underway. They will work closely with project management to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time.

Requirements

  • Technical Diploma in Engineering Technology.
  • Registration as a CET or PL. Eng. with APEGA or PEO.
  • 4-8 years experience working in an electrical engineering environment.
  • Experience in utility distribution design.
  • Microsoft 365 Suite.
  • Advanced experience in managing multiple proposals, estimates, and designs simultaneously.
  • Ability to prepare engineering drawings from sketches and general engineering and design information according to established standards and procedures.
  • Capable of developing estimates based on drawings and scopes of work.
  • Ability to read and comprehend electrical and construction plans from utilities, customers, and consultants.
  • Superior ability to meet tight deadlines and multi-task.
  • Capacity to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Ability to build relationships with clients, consultants, approval authorities, and utility representatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand client-specific requirements (standards and specifications) and applicable codes & regulations for preparing design packages.
  • Ability to maintain customer relationships while identifying and supporting and establishing new opportunities and business lines.
  • Understanding of project financial accounting and controls including change management processes and the creation of change orders.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of utility standards and specifications is an asset, i.e. CSA or utility specific standards.
  • Experience with software such as Spida-Calc, Bluebeam, PLSCAD, AGI-32, Microstation, and AutoCAD, would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to effectively lead, train, and provide mentorship to other designers and drafting professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Designing multiple overhead and underground distribution projects.
  • Ensuring accuracy, quality, and constructability of designs, calculations, and estimates for electrical utility projects.
  • Collaborating and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contributing to bid proposals, estimates, and material calculations.
  • Handing over high-quality design packages to clients or project teams on schedule.
  • Resolving design-related issues and field-level questions during project execution.
  • Working closely with project management to ensure profitable and timely delivery of design/build projects.
  • Preparing quotations and proposals using standard templates.
  • Analyzing plans and utility documentation to complete designs meeting client requirements.
  • Performing engineering calculations (e.g., pole line analysis, pulling tension calculations).
  • Utilizing design software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam, etc.) for design preparation.
  • Submitting design packages for approval.
  • Preparing design packages including electrical and civil layouts, plan and profile drawings, and attachment and clearance spreadsheets.
  • Compiling project Bill of Materials (BOMs).
  • Obtaining necessary permits, agreements, and design approvals (line assignments, crossing and proximity agreements, environmental approvals, utility design approvals, client contractual and financial documents).
  • Collaborating with design consultants and utilities.
  • Facilitating or attending external site and project-related meetings.
  • Facilitating or attending internal project meetings (handoff, kick-offs, reviews).
  • Monitoring project budget, costs, and scope.
  • Following change control processes and issuing change orders.
  • Collaborating with Project Management to prevent issues and resolve design-related problems.
  • Performing other duties as required.
