Distinguished MBSE Modeler

University of Dayton•Dayton, OH

About The Position

The University is seeking an experienced Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Modeler with a strong understanding of software and hardware development lifecycles and data integration across multiple sources. The role bridges systems engineering, software engineering, hardware engineering, and data management, using MBSE methodologies to guide development decisions, improve traceability, and align systems with mission and stakeholder needs. The Modeler develops and manages MBSE models to capture architectures, interfaces, behaviors, and requirements; defines data flows across sources; and connects modeling practices with software development activities and environments. The role also provides technical expertise and direction for Air Force Digital Materiel Management efforts, including helping clients understand DMM requirements and guidance and supporting junior engineers, project managers, and technicians as a subject matter expert. Candidates must be U.S. citizens due to requirements of the University's research contracts with the U.S. federal government. Applicants are asked to submit a cover letter addressing each minimum qualification and any applicable preferred qualifications. The University states its commitment to human dignity, diversity, fair outcomes, inclusion, and affirmative action for individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Systems Engineering.
  • 20 years of experience working in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 8 years of hands-on experience with MBSE methodologies and tools, such as Cameo/MagicDraw, Rhapsody, Enterprise Architect, or Capella, for software and/or hardware.
  • Proven experience leveraging MBSE in software development processes, including Agile, DevSecOps, and CI/CD.
  • 5 years of experience modeling data structures, flows, and integrations across heterogeneous systems.
  • Proven ability to use MBSE to drive decision-making in software development projects.
  • Knowledge of system-of-systems architectures, digital engineering practices, and model integration standards such as SysML, UPDM, UAF, and DoDAF.
  • Proven ability in complex requirements derivation, flow down, and management.
  • 10 years of experience engaging stakeholders to capture requirements, communicate system design, and verify system performance.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working across engineering domains.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen due to requirements of research contracts with the U.S. federal government.

Nice To Haves

  • 25 years of experience in Systems Engineering.
  • 10 years of experience in government, defense, or aerospace programs.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based architectures, APIs, and data exchange standards.
  • Experience connecting MBSE models to simulation environments or digital twins.
  • Demonstrated success championing MBSE adoption within software development teams.
  • Experience leading small technical teams.
  • Active TS Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and manage MBSE models, such as SysML/UML, to capture system architectures, interfaces, behaviors, and requirements.
  • Define and model data flows across multiple sources, ensuring consistency, interoperability, and alignment with enterprise-level architectures.
  • Collaborate with software engineering teams to translate MBSE artifacts into actionable software development tasks and architectures.
  • Drive software development activities by ensuring requirements, constraints, and interfaces are accurately represented in the system model.
  • Establish traceability between system requirements, MBSE models, and software implementation.
  • Support integration of modeling tools with software development environments, CI/CD pipelines, and data management systems.
  • Facilitate collaboration between systems engineers, software developers, and data engineers.
  • Provide technical expertise in model governance, configuration management, and MBSE adoption best practices.
  • Help clients understand Air Force Digital Materiel Management (DMM) requirements and guidance, applying advanced technical concepts to solve unusually complex problems.
  • Provide technical direction as a subject matter expert to junior engineers, project managers, and technicians, and support DMM efforts as needed.
