About The Position

Medtronic’s Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) Research & Development organization is seeking an experienced engineer to serve as a Distinguished Systems Engineer on product development programs and research feasibility studies. The role focuses on feasibility analyses, system development, integration, verification, and validation for CRM products. The engineer partners with systems engineering peers, marketing, product design, quality, and program management to define meaningful design inputs, develop robust systems, and establish effective verification and validation strategies. The position is an opportunity to provide technical leadership, establish best practices, and contribute to reliable products that serve Medtronic’s mission. The successful candidate can define work for others and execute independently from high-level scope and constraints. This is an onsite role in Mounds View, Minnesota, with onsite work four days per week and travel of less than 10% (approximately one to two trips per quarter). The position provides overall technical leadership for system solutions, from translating customer and business needs into designs through integration, risk reduction, verification, validation, evaluation, and launch. The engineer leads system teams, coordinates cross-functional decisions, develops and mentors systems engineers, and remains accountable for the technical correctness of the delivered solution. Responsibilities may also include technical oversight and on-site support during initial product launch until the product is stable and ready for transfer to Released Product Engineering. Candidates must have a relevant technical degree and substantial relevant experience, with the required years depending on degree level. They must bring in-depth knowledge of the clinical application of CRM products and recognized technical expertise in the medical device field. The role also calls for project-planning and problem-solving ability, strong organization and communication, and the judgment to assess technical risks and opportunities.

  • 15 years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree, or at least 13 years with a master’s degree, or 11 years with a Ph.D.
  • In-depth understanding of the clinical application of products within Cardiac Rhythm Management, including patient populations, indications, physicians, and market dynamics.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and thought leadership, with broad and deep knowledge in the medical device field and ability to work across multiple technical areas.
  • Demonstrated success planning R&D or systems projects or strategic functional initiatives and recommending technology application projects or solutions to meet medium- to long-range objectives.

  • Recognized technical authority and innovator in a field of expertise, or a recognized organizational resource within that field.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and communication skills.
