About The Position

BigQuery is Google's serverless data warehousing and analytics system for large and critical analytical workloads. BigQuery has pioneered the serverless query execution model among cloud datawarehouses and continues to innovate to bring insights to massive datasets as fast as possible. This role encompasses a broad range of scenarios involving storage, data lakes, query processing, advanced analytics, ML, and much more. You will bring expereienced database product sensibility to help align our internal development with Cloud ecosystem compatibility aspirations. As the Distinguished Engineer, you will be leading the technical long-term strategy for our team and working closely with our engineers to see it through, while setting high technical excellence in everything we do. Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience.
15 years of experience in engineering with experience in technical innovation.
10 years of database experience with data processing engines and systems.

Nice To Haves

Experience building SQL based transaction processing systems (e.g. OLTP) or larger scale analytics (e.g. OLAP).
Experience with high availability designs, parallel/horizontal scale-out database architectures, and cloud services.
Experience promoting product excellence and collaboration, driving a portfolio of concurrent engineering projects ranging from short-term critical feature launches to long-term research initiatives.
Experience motivating others to act by creating a shared sense of outlook or purpose, creating a compelling roadmap for the future, and communicating clearly, with a collaborative leadership approach.
Passionate about delighting enterprise customers, and an excellent understanding of enterprise workloads.

Responsibilities

Oversee and steer all the engineering projects in multiple locations as well as drive cross-functional engineering decisions across the BigQuery sites to deliver a data warehouse in BigQuery.
Provide domain expertise and engineering insight to guide early designs, accelerate project decision making and maintain close oversight of technical execution and proactively adjusting course where necessary.
Drive the improvements needed in the storage and query systems, including fundamental rethinking and rearchitecting of several aspects to build the next leap of innovation in analytics.
Partner with engineering and product management teams to drive product direction. Travel to work with engineering teams and broader leadership both within BigQuery and broadly across Google.
