About The Position

General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout the Midwest. General Excavating specializes in the construction of; underground utilities, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures. General Excavating is searching for a highly motivated and experienced Dispatcher. The Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating the daily transportation operations of the company's heavy haul fleet, including lowboy trailers, dump trucks, and the movement of heavy equipment, oversized loads, construction materials, and permanent materials. This position oversees transportation logistics, supervises company drivers, ensures DOT and regulatory compliance, and coordinates the efficient utilization of personnel and fleet resources to support construction operations. This position serves as the primary point of contact between field operations, Project Managers, Superintendents, mechanics, and company drivers, ensuring transportation activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company policies and applicable regulations.

Requirements

  • Heavy equipment hauling experience required.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class A CDL and a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) to pass and maintain insurability guidelines.
  • Ability to pass and maintain DOT/FMCSA requirements in regard to pre/postemployment drug screens and DOT physicals.
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) years minimum related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and dispatch daily transportation activities for lowboy trailers, dump trucks, and company equipment to support construction operations and project schedules.
  • Schedule and coordinate the movement of heavy equipment, oversized loads, construction materials, aggregate, pipe, bridge materials, and other permanent materials between job sites and company facilities.
  • Evaluate transportation requests, establish daily priorities, assign equipment and drivers, adjust schedules as operational needs change, and resolve logistical challenges to maintain productivity.
  • Supervise two or more CDL drivers by assigning work, providing training and coaching, monitoring performance, enforcing company policies, participating in hiring and disciplinary recommendations, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Manage DOT compliance activities, including Driver Qualification Files, CDL and medical certificate tracking, Hours of Service, ELD compliance, vehicle inspections, permit documentation, and required regulatory recordkeeping.
  • Obtain oversize and overweight permits, coordinate approved travel routes, verify bridge clearances and roadway restrictions, and arrange escort vehicles as required.
  • Coordinate daily vehicle inspections, review Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs), schedule repairs with maintenance personnel, monitor preventative maintenance, and maintain fleet readiness.
  • Serve as the primary transportation contact for Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, mechanics, vendors, and field personnel by coordinating transportation requests and resolving scheduling and operational issues.
  • Review and approve driver time records, monitor labor allocation, verify transportation-related coding, and maintain payroll and operational documentation.
  • Maintain accurate dispatch logs, equipment movement records, maintenance records, fuel usage reports, permits, inspections, compliance documentation, and other transportation records.
  • Monitor fleet utilization, transportation costs, driver productivity, and operational performance, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, service levels, and compliance.
  • Promote safe transportation practices by ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Coordinate with project management and estimating teams during job planning phases to determine equipment needs, haul requirements, and transportation constraints prior to mobilization.
  • Track and manage equipment availability across multiple projects to balance demand, reduce downtime, and support efficient fleet utilization.
  • Coordinate external trucking or subcontracted hauling services when internal fleet capacity is unavailable or cost-effective to do so.
  • Monitor fuel usage, mileage, and operational costs related to fleet activity and assist in identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Support jobsite mobilization and demobilization efforts, including sequencing equipment moves and coordinating multi-site transitions.
  • Ensure proper load securement practices are followed and verify compliance with applicable safety standards for transported equipment and materials.
  • Coordinate after-hours or emergency hauling needs as required to support project schedules and critical path activities.
  • Maintain communication with permitting agencies, DOT officials, and third-party escort services as needed for oversized or complex hauls.
  • Assist with accident/incident reporting related to transportation activities and coordinate follow-up documentation and corrective actions.
  • Participate in fleet planning discussions regarding equipment acquisition, replacement, and disposal based on operational needs.
  • Ensure accurate tracking of equipment location and status through GPS systems, dispatch software, or internal tracking logs.
  • Support onboarding of new drivers by coordinating orientation schedules, required training, and documentation completion.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and job-related training to maintain and enhance operational, safety, and technical competencies required for the role, including cross-functional and role-supporting skills to ensure continued job performance and operational coverage as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
