About The Position

College Police Dispatcher is a non-sworn, critical role responsible for answering emergency lines (campus emergency number 5555) and business lines, operating radio communications, and monitoring security/fire alarms. They utilize Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems to prioritize incidents, dispatch campus police, security officers, emergency services, and update logs. They often manage mass notifications through the college’s RAVE system. This is a casual, non-benefitted position.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to maintain composure during stressful, high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to operate radio systems, CAD software, and Microsoft Office.
  • Be able to attain DCJIS certification.
  • Must pass a thorough background check.
  • Must be able to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as this position is for an on-call member (casual position with Smith College).
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in public safety, security, or customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) and APCO PST1 certifications, or the ability to obtain them is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Answer emergency and non-emergency calls, obtaining critical information, and dispatching police, fire, or medical units.
  • Monitor security, intrusion, card access, and fire alarm systems.
  • Periodically monitor numerous security cameras.
  • Log incidents into our CAD system.
  • Perform CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Systems) queries for license, warrant, or criminal history checks.
  • Handle walk-in requests for assistance at the police department.
