Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Must be a United States Citizen, not less than 18 years of age.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Pass pre-employment dispatch testing; data entry speed must be higher than 7000 KPH.
  • Successfully pass a criminal history background check.
  • Ability to obtain CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) certification within thirty days from date of hire.
  • Ability to obtain ACIC (Arkansas Crime Information Center) Basic and Advanced certifications within six months of date of hire.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, make sound decisions in the performance of duties, and work independently on multiple tasks assigned.
  • Ability to perform duties effectively in a high stress environment, which requires task switching.
  • Ability to read and enter data into the computer system rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to maintain calm in emergency situations.
  • Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Maintain professional and diplomatic interactions with vendors, citizens, business owners, local public safety agencies, and outside representatives.
  • Must be proficient in the use of a computer and related software programs.
  • Must be able to effectively operate a multi-line telephone system and other standard office equipment.
  • Must be able to become proficient in the use of radio system equipment, computer aided dispatch system, mapping software, weather radio, Arkansas Crime Information Center Computer, 911 computer, recording systems, fire alarm panel, and Teletypewriter (TTY) using the 911 equipment and various software programs.
  • Ability to speak clearly and be understood on radio systems and telephone systems, as well as understand what is being said by others on these same systems, to ensure safety.

Responsibilities

  • Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
  • Operate a communications console and other related equipment to dispatch police and fire personnel and after-hours city on-call staff in response to requests for assistance in emergency and non-emergency situations in accordance with established departmental procedures and policies.
  • Dispatch police calls for service, monitor and log radio traffic generated by police personnel related to calls for service and self-initiated activity. Handle emergency transmissions and make decisions to facilitate response during high stress incidents.
  • Dispatch fire calls for service, monitor and log all radio traffic generated by fire personnel related to calls for service and self-initiated activity. Handle emergency “Mayday” activations and make decisions to facilitate response during high stress incidents.
  • Process all informational requests from officers. Handle police radio traffic when the main police channel has emergency traffic.
  • Dispatch calls for service and monitor the Citywide Channel for after-hours city emergency calls. Know each department’s/division’s policies for emergency calls and notify various contacts for these departments depending on the situation.
  • Answer all 911 calls for the City of Fayetteville including medical calls. Follow procedures for call taking and deal with callers who might be in distress, or some other state that may make obtaining information difficult. Process requests from callers who may have a communication disability and utilize services necessary to get the caller the assistance they need. Interpret map data when a wireless 911 call is received, document 911 data for statistical purposes.
  • Answer the Police Department Business Lines quickly and efficiently. Transfer calls to the appropriate location, enter emergency and non-emergency calls received, and answer questions in a professional, courteous manner. Process and prioritize multiple phone calls during busy shifts. Utilize resources available to answer questions on a variety of topics.
  • Perform regular and irregular shift work necessary to provide services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, (weekends and holidays included), and during inclement weather events.
  • Entry/deletion and validation of records entered into the Arkansas Crime Information System (ACIC) by following policies created by ACIC.
  • Update resource information and perform record maintenance needed for dispatch operations.
  • Respond to requests for service from citizens, common inquiries or complaints from the public, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Handle Freedom of Information Act requests for information and/or recordings.
  • Attend conferences, seminars, and other trainings for professional development purposes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
