About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Dispatcher I for the Wyoming Highway Patrol Dispatch Program in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This entry-level position introduces candidates to the dispatch career field through formal classroom and on-the-job training, covering basic knowledge, fundamentals, and procedures. WHP dispatchers serve as the vital communications link between the public and emergency services, using a two-way radio system and extensive computer operations. With a focus on officer safety, dispatchers ensure law enforcement officers receive necessary assistance and backup. The role requires excellent interpersonal skills, good memory retention, and the ability to process information calmly and accurately under pressure. Work involves rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. This position offers a $2,000 hiring bonus and is located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the capital city known for Cheyenne Frontier Days and having no state income tax.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Applicants must be able to work shifts, holidays, and weekends.
  • Applicants must be physically able to hear and record messages transmitted over radio, telephone, or similar devices.
  • Must not have driving privilege suspensions within three (3) years of the test date.
  • Applicants will be subject to a thorough background investigation, including a credit check and psychological, polygraph, medical, and drug testing.
  • Applicants must pass an FBI fingerprint check and must not have any felony convictions or indictments.
  • Applicants must not have used marijuana within one (1) year of the test date.
  • Applicants must not have used any other controlled substance within three (3) years of the test date.
  • 1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Dispatch)
  • Associate's Degree
  • No prior experience required

Responsibilities

  • Learn basic knowledge, fundamentals, and procedures of law enforcement dispatching.
  • Under supervision, complete on-the-job training, which involves actual workplace conditions that ensure the linkages between classroom knowledge and job performance skills.
  • Develop an experience base that complements the formal classroom training.
  • Upon completing the identified tasks and proper record documentation, progress to a level where constant supervision is no longer required.
  • Perform the next level's duties but is in an evaluation status that determines if job performance is satisfactory and meets the requirements necessary to be promoted.
