Discipline Lead - Civil & Structural

Hanwha Ocean Co., LtdHouston, TX

About The Position

Hanwha Ocean is transforming into a comprehensive EPCI(O) solutions provider, expanding its portfolio to include FPSO, FLNG, offshore renewables, floating production units, and major onshore energy and infrastructure developments. This strategic growth integrates Asian and American energy and infrastructure cultures across emerging markets. The company is expanding into onshore power plants (gas-based, combined-cycle) and onshore/offshore wind projects, complementing its existing offshore capabilities to offer end-to-end energy solutions. The Energy Plant Unit is seeking dynamic team members for groundbreaking projects. As Discipline Lead – Civil & Structural, you will spearhead the civil and structural engineering aspects for large-scale onshore power plant EPC projects, covering the entire lifecycle from feasibility studies through detailed design and construction support. The role demands over 10 years of experience in onshore natural-gas-based power generation and BESS, ideally gained with engineering organizations, EPC/EPCI contractors, project developers, or utility organizations. A proven history of leading civil/structural engineering for complex power/microgrid projects and extensive experience across Pre-FEED, FEED, and EPC(I) phases, including bid-phase technical definition, are essential. Preferred project experience includes simple-cycle/combined-cycle plants with gas turbines, gas engines, HRSGs, steam turbines, and Balance-of-Plant systems. This position offers comprehensive discipline leadership from FEED through the EPC execution phase. Responsibilities include developing and reviewing engineering deliverables such as site grading and drainage plans, earthworks, roads, site plot plans, general arrangements, foundation designs, underground utilities, steel structures (pipe racks, platforms, buildings), reinforced concrete works, retaining walls, electrical duct banks, paving, and stormwater management systems, ensuring adherence to international codes (ACI, AISC, ASCE) and client specifications. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, I&C, project management) is crucial for integrating civil and structural designs into the overall plant layout.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in U.S. is required.
  • 10+ years of experience in civil and structural engineering for large industrial or power generation projects, preferably within EPC environments.
  • Proven track record in reinforced concrete and steel structure design for heavy industrial facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant design codes and standards (ACI, AISC, ASCE, Eurocodes, API, etc.).
  • Proficiency in engineering software such as STAAD.Pro, Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, multi-project environments and make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency with CAD software and engineering design tools.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring capability, with experience leading engineering teams and complex design efforts.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and technical decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal teams, global engineering centers, vendors, EPC contractors, and clients.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with gas turbine, combined‑cycle, renewable, nuclear, or hybrid power generation facilities, including greenfield and brownfield projects.
  • Experience supporting power systems serving mission‑critical or high‑availability loads, such as data centers, industrial campuses, or critical infrastructure.
  • Experience working on projects with stringent uptime, performance, or operational continuity requirements, whether driven by utilities, IPPs, industrial customers, or data‑center operators.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively within operating power plant and construction environments, with a strong commitment to safety procedures and hazard awareness.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with operations, maintenance, commissioning, and construction teams to support safe and reliable plant operation.
  • Strong documentation, organizational, and project execution skills, with the ability to develop clear, accurate, and traceable engineering deliverables.
  • Proven ability to function effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural team environments, including collaboration with global engineering centers.
  • Fluent in English, with the ability to clearly communicate technical concepts in both written and verbal form.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee geotechnical investigations, site grading, drainage systems, and earthworks design, including interpretation of geotechnical reports, establishment of design parameters, and coordination with foundations and underground layouts.
  • Manage and review subcontracted or internally performed civil/structural design work, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget adherence.
  • Provide technical guidance during construction, including resolving field engineering issues, reviewing contractor submittments and shop drawings, conducting site inspections, and supporting construction sequencing and constructability resolution.
  • Champion safety in design by incorporating constructability reviews and risk assessments into every stage of the project.
  • Provide technical leadership for complex design issues involving decisions impacting project schedule and cost issues.
  • Lead and support value engineering efforts related to underground foundations, structures, drainage, embedment as well as any existing buried structures/piping that may interfere with new work.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface with EPC contractors, OEMs, system integrators, building contractors, civil work subcontractors, and clients.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety, regulatory, and industry requirements (OSHA, EPA).
  • Enforce QA/QC and Management of Change (MOC) processes, maintaining accurate and auditable project documentation.
  • Review specifications and client requirements for contractual alignment and prepare formal technical responses to RFIs, comments, and deviations.
  • Conduct technical evaluations and feasibility studies to assess project risk.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers, ensuring consistent quality of deliverables.
  • Oversee and support civil/structural installation activities to meet schedule, cost, quality, and safety objectives.
  • Maintain and govern discipline documentation, including site work records, standards, specifications, and as-built records.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, standards, and best practices in civil and structural engineering. Act as the civil/structural code authority, ensuring application and interpretation of applicable codes and standards (ACI, AISC, ASCE, IBC, local AHJ requirements), and supporting engineering judgment on code compliance matters.
  • Support civil and structural scope definition, man-hour estimating, and execution planning during FEED and bid phases, ensuring alignment between design assumptions, construction methodology, and cost basis.
  • Represent Hanwha Ocean in technical discussions with clients, JV partners, and regulatory bodies, supporting design clarity, risk mitigation, and issue resolution.
  • Support procurement activities for Civil & Structural systems, including preparation and technical review of RFQs, bid evaluations, and vendor selection for Civil & Structural related packages.
  • Knowledge of project procurement workflows and coordination with engineering, construction, and commissioning teams to support schedule-driven purchasing activities.
