About The Position

The Louisiana Department of Health's mission is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana. This position requires good critical thinking skills, customer service skills, and strong reading comprehension skills. The role involves determining the appropriate course of action and timely disposition of cases. It requires communicating with the public via phone and effectively managing a caseload daily. Knowledge of medical conditions, vocational factors, medical terminology, and SSA policies, provisions, and procedures is necessary. The position offers the opportunity to apply advanced analytical skills, collaborate with a dedicated team, and play a meaningful role in delivering accurate and timely disability determinations that directly impact individuals and families across Louisiana. An ideal candidate should possess competencies such as accepting direction, learning actively, making accurate judgments, adapting to change, communicating effectively, demonstrating initiative, displaying professionalism, following policies and procedures, managing time, and thinking critically.

Requirements

  • Three years of social services experience; OR Six years of full-time experience in any field; OR A bachelor's degree.
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
  • Knowledge of medical conditions, vocational factors, medical terminology, SSA policies, provisions and procedures.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate course of action and timely move a case to disposition.
  • Ability to talk with the public on the phone and effectively manage a caseload on a daily basis.
  • Must pass a federal background investigation and SSA suitability process.

Responsibilities

  • Adjudicates disability claims filed under the Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income programs of the Social Security Administration in accordance with the Social Security Act, state laws, federal regulations, and Social Security rulings.
  • Maintains a caseload of Social Security Disability claims and claims for Supplemental Security Income at various stages of development.
  • Interprets operational policies, guidelines, and regulations.
  • Researches policies, regulations, and precedents to be applied in determining eligibility.
