About The Position

PRIME AE is seeking a Director of Transportation – Highway to join their Tampa, FL office. This leadership role requires a blend of technical expertise in highway engineering, project management, client relations, and business development. The Director will oversee complex roadway and transportation projects, lead multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to the firm's growth in the Florida transportation market by strengthening relationships with agencies like FDOT, identifying new business opportunities, and mentoring staff. The position involves active involvement in project delivery while influencing the growth of the Transportation practice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) required
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in highway engineering and project management.
  • Proven experience delivering DOT projects, preferably with FDOT or similar agencies.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation (preferred), AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and roadway modeling tools such as InRoads and OpenRoads.
  • Strong knowledge of AASHTO design standards and DOT guidelines.
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing complex transportation projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including proposal development and client presentations.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel regionally as needed.
  • A high level of professionalism and integrity, representing PRIME to clients and industry partners.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and management of a wide range of transportation projects including urban and rural roadways, interstates, interchanges, sidewalks, intersections, traffic operations, highway safety, and ADA compliance.
  • Oversee maintenance of traffic (MOT), geometric design, site planning, concept alignments, and transportation planning.
  • Oversee the preparation and quality control of deliverables across all project stages—preliminary engineering, final design, reports, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to design engineers and technicians.
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary design teams and manage subconsultants to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Foster strong client relationships through consistent communication, project performance, and professional integrity.
  • Champion the growth and development of junior engineering staff, focusing on skills development and career progression.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities across the North Florida region, leveraging existing networks and industry involvement.
  • Support marketing and proposal efforts, including preparing Statements of Interest (SOIs), technical and price proposals, and responses to RFPs.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations such as ACEC, ASCE, AASHTO, and regional transportation associations.
  • Promote a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability within the team.
