About The Position

BackOffice provides a comprehensive accounting platform for multi-unit restaurants, automating financial operations, and ensuring compliance through the calculation and submission of sales and payroll taxes. We are seeking a strategic and results-oriented Director, Tax Operations, to lead our tax service delivery. This pivotal role is responsible for the end-to-end operational strategy and execution of our tax function, ensuring accurate and timely compliance for thousands of restaurant locations across federal, state, and local jurisdictions, with a strong emphasis on multi-state sales and payroll taxes. You will own the service delivery, drive improvements in internal processes and automation, lead a team of tax specialists, and ensure seamless data flows from various systems to tax engines. Partnering closely with Operations, Customer Success, Product/Engineering, and external advisors, you will enhance quality, and profitability while mitigating tax risks. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring deep expertise in tax compliance, operational excellence, and team development. This position is based out of our Littleton, CO office. We are unable to offer work sponsorship for this role.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of tax compliance/operations experience, with a strong preference for multi-state sales and payroll tax experience, particularly within the restaurant or multi-location/hospitality sector.
  • 4+ years in a leadership role (Director/Manager level preferred).
  • Track record of leading, coaching, and developing teams (up to 10 individuals).
  • Hands-on familiarity with tax engines (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, OneSource/TaxJar) and payroll platforms (e.g., ADP, Gusto, Paychex/UKG), or the ability to work effectively with these systems.
  • Experience with tax technology implementation, workflow automation, and system integrations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own the service delivery for sales and payroll tax, including the end-to-end process of calculation, filing, and remittance across federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
  • Oversee the review of return workpapers, approval of filings, management of payments, and prompt handling of tax notices and audit inquiries.
  • Ensure 100% timely filing and remittance for all assigned jurisdictions by maintaining accurate tax filing calendars.
  • Develop and maintain standardized workpapers, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), tax controls, and training materials, conducting recurring quality reviews.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex technical or audit issues, coordinating responses with external advisors and tax authorities as needed.
  • Partner with third-party tax partners (e.g., Synexus) to drive continuous improvements in processes and bi-directional data flow.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of tax specialists (up to 10 individuals), fostering a culture of accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to team members, overseeing workflow, software usage, and tax processes within the team.
  • Define, monitor, and report on team KPIs, holding the team accountable to establish targets for accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency.
  • Drive continuous improvement in internal processes and automation for tax services, focusing on data flows from POS/timekeeping/payroll systems to tax engines, and reducing manual touchpoints.
  • Partner with Product/Engineering teams on tax-related integrations and system enhancements.
  • Build and maintain interactive dashboards and reporting that provide real-time insights into capacity, deadlines, workflow progress, risks, and outcomes to support decisions.
  • Develop and implement the tax operational strategy, aligning with business goals.
  • Identify and support tax planning opportunities and innovative tax strategies.
  • Develop and maintain robust internal controls and risk assessment frameworks.
  • Ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations across federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
  • Lead audits, respond to notices, and manage tax controversies.
  • Partner cross-functionally on client escalations, liability reconciliations, month-end close support, and system integrations.
  • Serve as the primary operational contact for third-party partners (e.g., Synexus).
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on governing agency mandates and system functionality.
