About The Position

The Director of Subcontracts will lead the company’s Subcontracts function within the broader Supply Chain organization, partnering closely with other capabilities to support successful portfolio execution. This is a strategic leadership role within a fast-paced Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) environment. The Director will leverage construction expertise, sound economic decision-making, and strong strategic partnerships to drive subcontractor performance, cost efficiency, quality, and schedule execution across the company’s portfolio. The company designs, builds, and operates large-scale solar and energy storage facilities for leading utilities and asset owners. The organization emphasizes ownership, collaboration, and empowering employees to contribute meaningfully to business success. This is a direct-hire position.

Requirements

  • Experience in construction, preferably within civil or electrical disciplines, in heavy industrial or large-scale EPC environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing subcontracts, including subcontractor selection, negotiation, and execution of Master Service Agreements (MSAs) and project-level agreements.
  • Experience managing subcontractor field performance, change orders, claims, and/or dispute resolution on active construction projects.
  • Proven experience leading, developing, and managing a high-performing team.
  • Experience developing preferred-partner or strategic sourcing programs with construction subcontractors.
  • Experience partnering cross-functionally on portfolio-level commercial structures, standards, sourcing strategies, and execution.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with utility-scale solar, renewable energy, or other large-scale energy EPC construction projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience developing and implementing self-perform versus subcontract strategies across a portfolio of projects.
  • Familiarity with construction management and project controls software such as Procore, Textura, Vista, or similar platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and communicate the vision, strategy, and priorities for the Subcontracts function.
  • Develop actionable plans that align the Subcontracts team with broader business and Supply Chain objectives.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to regional business leaders and other functional leaders.
  • Establish standards, processes, and best practices that support consistent subcontract execution across the portfolio.
  • Attract, develop, and retain a high-performing Subcontracts team.
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations for team members.
  • Identify individual development opportunities and build capabilities across the organization.
  • Provide timely, candid, and constructive feedback.
  • Address performance, capability, and role-fit concerns directly and with appropriate urgency.
  • Identify talent and resource needs early and develop succession plans to support future growth.
  • Establish and maintain preferred partnerships with key subcontractors.
  • Develop relationships based on mutual benefit, aligned incentives, accountability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
  • Build a strategic subcontractor network that creates competitive advantages across the project portfolio.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to develop sourcing strategies and long-term subcontractor relationships.
  • Lead the selection, negotiation, and execution of subcontract agreements.
  • Evaluate subcontractors based on Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) performance, cost, quality, schedule, capabilities, and overall ability to meet project commitments.
  • Apply a disciplined and consistent bid-review process to evaluate subcontractor proposals.
  • Collaborate with regional business leaders to align on final subcontractor selections.
  • Ensure subcontract agreements are executed accurately, on time, and within established budgets.
  • Ensure subcontract terms and agreements are appropriately aligned with project scope, EPC requirements, and commercial terms.
  • Bring practical, field-based construction expertise to subcontracting decisions.
  • Provide guidance on scope definition, construction means and methods, sequencing, productivity assumptions, and execution strategies.
  • Apply construction knowledge to identify potential risks and opportunities during the contracting and project execution processes.
  • Partner with project teams to ensure subcontract strategies align with field execution requirements.
  • Establish clear expectations and accountability for subcontractor performance.
  • Monitor and manage subcontractor performance related to EHS, quality, schedule, cost, and change orders.
  • Minimize change orders through effective upfront contracting, clear scope definition, and disciplined contract documentation.
  • Rigorously evaluate and challenge change-order requests when appropriate.
  • Address performance issues early and directly with subcontractors.
  • Support the resolution of claims, disputes, and other contractual issues associated with active construction projects.
  • Benchmark subcontracting practices and performance against internal and external best practices.
  • Establish meaningful performance metrics and reporting mechanisms to evaluate the effectiveness of the Subcontracts function.
  • Use data, performance measures, and market knowledge to inform strategic decisions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce risk, increase reliability, and improve cost efficiency.
