About The Position

Reporting to the Vice President, Supply Chain, the Director of Strategic Sourcing provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the health system’s sourcing and contracting lifecycle. Operating under limited supervision guided by division objectives, this role is responsible for leading the development and execution of enterprise-wide sourcing strategies that optimize cost, quality, and supplier performance across clinical and non-clinical portfolios. The Director partners closely with clinical, operational, and financial leaders to drive value-based purchasing, clinical standardization, and supply chain transformation initiatives. This position exercises direct supervision over a team of sourcing, contracting, and value analysis professionals, establishing departmental goals and managing resources to ensure alignment with organizational cost efficiency, patient outcomes, and supply resiliency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in supply chain, sourcing, or procurement (preferably in a healthcare environment)
  • At least 5 years of formal supervisory experience managing professional staff
  • Mastery of Healthcare Sourcing: Expert knowledge of healthcare supply chain dynamics, including clinical products, medical/surgical categories, Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), and progressive contracting mechanisms.
  • Advanced Financial & Quantitative Acumen: Ability to analyze large, complex volumes of spend data, build predictive cost-containment models, and evaluate spend-per-case metrics to identify savings opportunities.
  • Executive Negotiation & Relationship Management: High-level negotiation, contract design, and supplier relationship management skills, with a proven track record of optimizing cost, quality, and service outcomes.
  • Strategic Stakeholder Engagement: Superior communication and change management skills, with the ability to influence, facilitate consensus, and establish credibility with senior leadership, physicians, and cross-functional clinical committees.
  • Systems & ERP Literacy: Proficiency with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and advanced healthcare ERP infrastructure (e.g., Workday, Lawson, Epic).

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes enterprise-wide sourcing strategies across clinical and non-clinical categories, including medical/surgical supplies, implants, capital equipment, and purchased services to optimize total cost of ownership.
  • Leads comprehensive category management activities, including regular spend analysis, macro-market assessments, and the long-term development of strategic sourcing roadmaps.
  • Drives product rationalization and standardization initiatives by collaborating with value analysis committees, physicians, nursing staff, and clinical leaders to align purchasing decisions with quality outcomes and patient care objectives.
  • Achieves annual cost savings and cost avoidance targets through the proactive reduction of price variation, optimization of contract pricing structures, and minimization of off-contract purchasing.
  • Manages, mentors, and develops a professional team of sourcing, contracting, and value analysis staff by establishing performance expectations, operational workflows, and KPI accountability frameworks.
  • Develops strategic supplier partnerships and governs vendor performance using data-driven scorecards to monitor cost, service delivery, compliance, and innovation metrics.
  • Mitigates health system supply chain risk through the implementation of diversified sourcing strategies, domestic alternative pathways, and proactive contingency planning to ensure total continuity of supply.
  • Enforces rigorous contract compliance and establishes departmental governance processes to ensure total adherence to sourcing standards, policies, and applicable legal regulations.
