Director, Strategic Sourcing & Procurement

StravaSan Francisco, CA
$235,000 - $255,000Hybrid

About The Position

Strava is looking for a Director, Strategic Sourcing & Procurement to establish the Procurement function. This role involves designing the operating model, commercial strategy, and systems, and then managing them. It offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about creating systems and processes from scratch. A significant part of the role will include negotiating major agreements and achieving savings targets in collaboration with FP&A. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills for commercial negotiations, the ability to restructure deals for multiple objectives, and confidence in maintaining a position despite senior stakeholder pushback. The primary focus will be on infrastructure spend and B2B SaaS, but the scope extends to all material spend areas, including agencies and professional services. This position reports to the General Counsel and is based in the San Francisco office, operating under a flexible hybrid model requiring more than half of the time on-site (three days per week).

Requirements

  • 10+ years experience building a procurement or strategic sourcing function
  • Substantial experience negotiating enterprise B2B SaaS and technology agreements, with a demonstrable record of Finance-validated commercial improvement.
  • People management experience, including hiring, developing, and retaining team members.
  • Fluency translating spend data into a commercial narrative for executive audiences.
  • Exposure to public company or pre-IPO purchasing controls, segregation of duties, and audit requirements.
  • Confidence using modern tools and systems (e.g., Zip, Ironclad, Slack, Notion, AI) to amplify impact.

Nice To Haves

  • The instinct of a builder. You are energized rather than daunted by an empty org chart and an undefined process.
  • Genuine commercial rigor. You treat a negotiation as an enjoyable analytical problem and know how to strategically leverage every position.
  • Judgment and standing to hold a position under pressure, and the relationship skills to do so without becoming an obstacle people route around.
  • Proactively spotting potential issues and taking initiative to resolve them, understanding that "nothing is somebody else's problem."
  • A collaborative, no-task-is-beneath-me approach to your work.
  • Professionalism without ego.

Responsibilities

  • Stand up the Procurement function, defining the operating model, policy, thresholds, and decision rights that govern how Strava buys.
  • Build and lead the team, starting by hiring and developing a Manager, Procurement Operations, and shaping how the function grows from there.
  • Own a named portfolio of our largest agreements, leading negotiations personally and holding accountability for commercial outcomes.
  • Carry a hard savings target, with a baseline methodology agreed with FP&A.
  • Establish renewal calendar discipline across the portfolio, engaging early enough on major agreements to create genuine leverage.
  • Develop a negotiation playbook, benchmarking approach, and escalation criteria.
  • Partner with Legal on contracting, Finance on budget and savings validation, and IT and Security on vendor review, keeping all tracks running in parallel rather than in series.
  • Drive vendor rationalization across the long tail, identifying overlap, underused licenses, and consolidation opportunities.
  • Give leadership clear, credible visibility into what we spend, with whom, and what we're getting for it.
