About The Position

This system leadership position is responsible for developing and executing strategic, market analysis and business planning activity for Duke Health. The role involves leading and facilitating strategic planning processes, developing timelines for plan refreshes to enhance competitive position, and responding to market dynamics. It includes staffing planning processes, assisting with leadership retreats, priority setting, and tracking projects. The position is responsible for organizing and directing planning efforts across Duke Health, integrating clinical service line activities with business development, and developing strategic/business plans to support organizational goals. A key aspect is leading a team of professionals in creating written plans with goals, objectives, data, measures of success, and performance evaluation methods. Maintaining strong relationships across the organization is crucial for quality deliverables and synchronizing clinical, operational, and financial planning. The role also involves working closely with the Certificate of Need function, incorporating regulatory issues into plans, and staying current on relevant regulations. Overseeing structured analysis and business planning for new program development and business opportunities is also a responsibility. Additionally, the role collaborates on the annual Environmental Assessment, interpreting and presenting data to various organizational levels, and educating staff on reporting quantitative and qualitative information. Directing the production and collection of financial, clinical, and market data is essential, requiring collaboration with various Duke Health departments. The position also identifies opportunities to improve financial and operational performance, coordinates efforts across entity boundaries, and develops Planning staff to meet organizational needs. Setting goals for staff, supporting their development through training, and leading a team of professionals (managers, analysts, administrative staff) are integral parts of the role.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of health care planning databases.
  • Knowledge of Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint software.
  • Must be able to achieve results in a large, complex organization.
  • Highly developed verbal, written, and analytical skills are necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to facilitate meetings, and foster trust.
  • Ability to present complex information to all levels of the organization.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects and processes simultaneously.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to perform with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to travel within the market area as needed.

  • Supervises staff independently to both empower and motivate them while also holding them accountable for key tasks and job responsibilities.
  • Masters Degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or related field.
  • Five years of progressive responsibility in such areas as hospital administration, provider strategic planning, business and operations planning, with proven success in facilitation of strategic processes, business plan development and execution, and strategic analyses.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred (for Director level).
  • Seven years of progressive responsibility in such areas as hospital administration, provider strategic planning, business and operations planning, with proven success in facilitation of strategic processes, business plan development and execution, and strategic analyses.
  • Must possess prior supervisory experience (for Senior Director level).

  • Lead a team of professionals (managers, analysts, and administrative staff) in the successful execution of departmental responsibilities.
  • Supervise and manage project teams to develop Duke Health strategic plans across entities and geographies.
  • Supervise and manage project teams, inclusive of stakeholders and leaders internal and external to Duke Health, to guide and develop organizational strategic plans.
  • Advise and provide guidance to other professionals.
  • Mentor and coach staff.
