About The Position

The Director, Strategic Initiatives is a senior leader who helps shape and lead Walmart for Good’s workforce and economic mobility efforts. This person plays two critical roles: Advisor to the business: Working closely with Walmart leaders to help align business priorities with community impact and create shared value. Philanthropic leader: Designing and leading initiatives that expand opportunity for workers and strengthen workforce systems. The Director will focus on practical, place-based solutions—helping ensure our work connects to real people, real employers, and real communities. They will build partnerships across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors to help working adults gain skills and move into better jobs. This is a highly collaborative role that requires strong judgment, clear thinking, and the ability to turn complex workforce challenges into actionable solutions. About the Team: This role sits within the Creating Opportunity team at Walmart for Good. We work to improve how people learn, gain skills, and advance—no matter where they start. A key part of our work focuses on: Helping employers recognize skills, not just degrees Making it easier to understand and use credentials Improving how skills are shared and recognized across systems Expanding access to good jobs We work closely with employers, community organizations, educators, policymakers, and other funders to make these changes happen—especially in ways that are grounded in local communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Social Science, Communications, or related field and 5 years’ experience managing cross-functional projects for governmental or non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, or corporations OR 7 years’ experience managing cross-functional projects for governmental or non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, or corporations.
  • Experience leading complex initiatives that deliver real results
  • Strong understanding of workforce development, economic mobility, or related fields
  • Interest in how technology is changing work and opportunity
  • Experience working across sectors (business, nonprofit, public sector)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and influence senior leaders
  • Strong problem-solving and execution skills
  • Commitment to teamwork, integrity, and impact

  • Develop and Lead Strategy: Shape the long-term strategy for workforce and economic mobility efforts; Design initiatives that help people build skills and access better jobs; Focus on solutions that can work at scale while staying grounded in local communities
  • Advise the Business and Drive Shared Value: Help identify opportunities where business growth and workforce advancement go hand in hand; Support efforts that strengthen both the company and the communities it serves
  • Drive Cross-Functional Initiatives: Lead projects and collaborations focused on workforce innovation and community impact; Build partnerships across nonprofit, public, and private sectors; Ensure efforts are coordinated and reinforce each other
  • Advance Future of Work Preparedness: Anticipate the effects of AI, automation, and labor trends to guide our philanthropic investments; Understand how these shifts affect frontline workers and local communities; Use these insights to guide strategy and investments
  • Strengthen Local Ecosystems: Support community-based organizations and local partnerships; Help build stronger connections between training, credentials, and jobs; Ensure work reflects the needs of specific places and populations
  • Manage Delivery and Results: Set workplans and evaluation systems to enable data-driven decision-making and visible outcomes.
  • Contribute Thought Leadership: Represent Walmart For Good in national workforce conversations; Serve as a credible voice in workforce and economic mobility conversations; Share what we’re learning through partnerships, events, and publications
  • Mentor and Lead: Mentor team members and partners; Contribute to a collaborative, inclusive, and purpose-driven culture
