Director, Sporting Human Resources

Boston Legacy FCBoston, MA
Onsite

About The Position

Boston Legacy FC is seeking a Director of Sporting Human Resources to serve as the dedicated people and culture partner to our sporting organization. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Legal Officer and partnering closely with the General Manager, this role is embedded with the sporting side of the Club supporting our coaching staff, technical and performance teams, athletic training and medical staff, and football operations. This is a leadership-focused, builder role for someone who thrives at the intersection of high-performance sport and people development. You will design and run the programs that help our sporting leaders lead well: leadership development, performance coaching, manager enablement, structured feedback cycles, and training. In this role, you will also be asked to support team members beyond the leadership team - supporting sporting employees with performance, communication, etc. Your north star is a sporting environment that is healthy, accountable, high-trust, and built to win on and off the pitch. This is primarily a staff-facing role, however you will be available to offer support to players as needed. All recruiting, HR administration, and payroll functions are owned by the Club’s business-side People team, allowing you to focus entirely on developing leaders and strengthening the sporting culture.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of progressive human resources, people, or talent development experience, including time supporting a sporting or professional sports organization (soccer preferred; other professional or collegiate sports considered).
  • Demonstrated understanding of how a sporting organization operates and how its people work together including the relationships and interdependencies among coaches, athletic trainers, medical and performance staff, general managers, and football operations.
  • Proven strength in performance coaching, leadership development, and manager enablement, ideally in fast-paced, high-performance settings.
  • Hands-on experience designing and delivering HR training programs and administering LMS platforms.
  • Skilled facilitator of 1:1s, feedback cycles, and development conversations.
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence, maturity, discretion, and judgment, with the ability to be a credible, neutral partner trusted by leaders and staff alike.
  • A builder’s mindset — comfortable creating structures, programs, and processes from the ground up in a start-up environment, and driving consistent results.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to matches and events, and to work evenings and weekends as the schedule requires.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a Boston Legacy FC background check as well as a separate background check as required by the NWSL.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the dedicated people and culture partner to the sporting organization, reporting to the COO/CLO and partnering closely with the GM and sporting department leaders.
  • Build leadership capability across the sporting staff including coaching, developing, and enabling coaches, technical staff, and department heads to lead their teams effectively.
  • Design, deliver, and facilitate leadership development programming tailored to a high-performance sporting environment.
  • Own the performance management cadence for sporting staff, including goal-setting, structured 1:1 frameworks, regular feedback cycles, and ongoing performance coaching.
  • Act as a trusted, neutral, and confidential resource for sporting staff and players, supporting healthy working relationships and a respectful, high-trust, accountable culture.
  • Advise sporting leadership on team dynamics, communication, and effective collaboration across coaches, athletic trainers, medical and performance staff, the GM, and football operations.
  • Build and administer HR training programs and own the learning management system (LMS) for the sporting department, including content curation, rollout, and adoption tracking.
  • Partner with the business-side People team to ensure sporting staff are well supported across the broader employee experience, while recruiting, HR administration, and payroll remain with that team.
  • Help define and reinforce the cultural standards, behaviors, and norms of a championship-caliber sporting organization.
  • Stay up to date on best practices from other NWSL and professional sports teams and constantly evolve our internal processes.
  • Travel to home matches and select away matches and events as needed, while maintaining a primary on-site presence in Massachusetts with the team.
