About The Position

The Director of Spiritual Care and Education is responsible to conduct programs of Clinical Pastoral Education under the standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) in the Department of Spiritual Care and Education of the Mount Sinai Health System. S/he develops curriculum, supervises students, clinical work, provides educational opportunities, and evaluates students. The Director will coordinate all efforts of pastoral education and training for interns and residents in the Department.

Requirements

  • M.S. in Theological Sciences or equivalent relevant experience
  • Completion of a minimum of four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
  • 5 years of clinical training in chaplaincy and chaplaincy supervision
  • ordination or commissioning for ministry by a recognized religious group
  • a current endorsement for Chaplaincy by a recognized religious group
  • appearance before a national certifying commission for assessment of competency
  • Certified as Supervisor or Associate Supervisor by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education and remain in good standing with that organization

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement curriculum. Participate in teaching/lecturing students.
  • Provide on-site supervision of students, including modeling spiritual care with patients for students, and direct observation of students with patients
  • Provide CPE training for intern groups. Assign, review, and comment on students? written materials
  • Evaluate the students? personal and professional functioning, write an evaluative report in accordance with ACPE standards, and complete ACPE registration forms for students who complete their program
  • Conduct admissions interviews, communicate admission decisions to the Registrar, and handle application materials in accordance with ACPE standards
  • Facilitate and attend meetings of the Department?s Spiritual Care and Education Advisory Committee to inform members of the educational activities
  • Develop subcommittees of the Department?s Spiritual Care and Education Advisory Committee, as necessary, to meet ACPE requirements at the other Mount Sinai Health System hospitals
  • Responsible for the planning and administration of the overall training program
  • Coordinate Spiritual Care on-call coverage for interns and residents
  • Serve on institutional committees as appointed
  • Participate in the Department?s plan for continuous quality improvement
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • The Director is expected to actively maintain a clinical presence within the hospitals where s/he has students
  • Participate in team/staff meeting and rounds with patients
  • Contribute to the field of chaplaincy through innovative and evidence based teaching curricula
  • Author/co-author articles and/or books relevant to spiritual care and education
  • Participate in professional development activities
