About The Position

The Director-level Architect for Drug Discovery will strategize and define the end-to-end architecture for a next-generation, AI-powered Design–Make–Test–Learn (DMTL) engine. This role sits at the intersection of science, data, automation, and AI, translating discovery strategy into scalable, production-grade technology platforms that accelerate pipeline delivery and create durable competitive advantage through proprietary data. The role combines deep technical leadership, hands-on architectural design (accelerated through the use of GenAI), and people leadership, leading a team of solution architects while guiding delivery across Discovery, Data Science, and Engineering. This role matters because you will be instrumental in industrializing drug discovery, ensuring J&J moves beyond experimentation to a fully scaled, learning-driven discovery engine that is data driven and under continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • A background in Computer Science or equivalent, with 7+ years of experience leading a commercial or IT domain in digital solutions, systems integration, or architecture.
  • Proven experience in implementing automation architecture for large initiatives. (> USD 500Mio)
  • Deep experience with integration patterns to connect multiple solution components and discovery systems.
  • Ability to assess proposed solutions, articulate options, define architectural principles and recommend a path forward. Understanding how to translate business process needs into technology solutions; comfortable working at an abstract level and “shifting” to the highest-impact answer.
  • Skilled at articulating trade-offs among business needs, technology requirements, timelines, costs, and risks, and be able to influence across multiple levels of a global organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Cloud-native and serverless architecture across major cloud providers, including containers and orchestration.
  • Modern integration: API design, API management, event-driven patterns.
  • Lab automation and orchestration.
  • Data & analytics: data integration, MDM, data governance, lakehouse/warehouse patterns, and streaming analytics.
  • AI/ML enablement: MLOps, DataOps, AgentOps foundations, responsible AI considerations, and implement GenAI and Agentic AI safely for productivity and customer experiences.
  • DevSecOps and platform engineering: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, automated security scanning, and policy as code.
  • Observability and reliability engineering: distributed tracing, logging/metrics, and tooling to meet SLO/SLAs.
  • Confidence operating in complex, regulated global ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Define and lead the architecture for this large initiative, encompassing DMTL workflows, data platforms, and automation ecosystems. Establish and drive a forward-looking roadmap aligned to Discovery strategy, ensuring scalability across biologics in the near term, followed by synthetic modalities.
  • Architect closed-loop data generation systems that integrate molecular design models with laboratory automation and robotics outputs. Ensure alignment with scientific data platforms, semantic layers, and agentic-AI capabilities to enable standardized, high-quality data and reproducible learning cycles.
  • Design solutions with a strong focus on computational scalability and data interoperability, ensuring seamless integration across lab systems, automation layers, and enterprise platforms.
  • Guide the translation of architectural designs into robust, production-grade solutions. Partner closely with product owners and engineering leaders to be responsible for delivery strategy, dependency management, and release execution, ensuring alignment to architectural principles.
  • Lead and coach a solution architects, driving consistency in architectural practices, strengthening domain expertise across AI, data, and lab automation, and ensuring high-quality design governance. Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and technical excellence.

Benefits

  • The opportunity to lead high-impact initiatives in a world-class healthcare organization, improving experiences for patients, customers, and colleagues.
  • A collaborative, supportive environment where your architecture leadership, coaching, and curiosity are valued.
  • The ability to influence product direction and accelerate innovation on a global scale.
