About The Position

The Director Small Business Development is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC). This includes managing staff, counseling entrepreneurs, leading training sessions, marketing SBDC services, managing reporting requirements, preparing budgets, and developing strategic plans. The role also involves promoting small business interests through networking and presentations to various stakeholders, including legislators and financial institutions, and serving on economic development committees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related discipline.
  • Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of job-related experience or business ownership.
  • Knowledge of business management, start-up and expansion.
  • Knowledge of accounting and finance.
  • Knowledge of business planning software and spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of business formulas and ratio analysis.
  • Knowledge of bank loan application packaging.
  • Knowledge of technology for small businesses including AI.
  • Skills in teaching.
  • Skills in coaching.
  • Skills in managing.
  • Skills in marketing.
  • Ability to interact effectively and authentically with the public.
  • Ability to think critically about small business problems and potential solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, train, and supervise business advisors and administrative staff of the SBDC.
  • Counsel with entrepreneurs/clients of the SBDC to start or expand businesses, create jobs, and raise capital.
  • Lead training/workshops for entrepreneurs on business related topics.
  • Market the services of the SBDC to the community (e.g., business leaders, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations and bankers/lenders).
  • Attend SBDC regional meetings and the ASBDC national conference.
  • Manage the reporting requirements of the SBA, the SBDC Regional Office and San Jacinto College.
  • Measure, document, and provide feedback to stakeholders on the attainment of goals.
  • Prepare the annual budget and monitor throughout the year.
  • Lead in the development and implementation of the strategic plan and lead SBDC through the accreditation process.
  • Develop new programs and identify and purchase necessary business/management tools and software.
  • Promote the interests of small businesses by networking with and making presentations to legislators, bankers, economic development organizations, chambers of commerce and other business groups.
  • Inform legislators on progress of the SJC-SBDC supporting small business.
  • Serve on appropriate committees and task forces for economic development groups in the College’s district.
  • SBDC team leader for Performance Management (IPPs).
