About The Position

Facilitate achievement of School of Natural Sciences goals by coordinating building maintenance and repair, supervising instrument technicians, managing purchasing and equipment funds, and overseeing the ordering, storage, disposal, and inventory of chemicals, supplies, and equipment.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a science discipline is required.
  • A minimum of three years of related experience is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the proper handling of chemicals is required.
  • Familiarity with inventory, database, and budgeting systems is required.
  • Good managerial, organizational, and communication skills are required.
  • Supervisory experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Act as building manager for Mark Jefferson and Strong.
  • Serve as the point of contact for the administrative unit in coordinating building maintenance, repair, and unexpected building problems.
  • Manage proper storage, security, and disposal of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain chemical inventory for the administrative unit.
  • Prepare, implement, and advise, along with the administrative unit Director and Health & Safety, on safety procedures for handling chemicals in accordance with OSHA and Michigan/Federal Hazard Communication Standards.
  • Grant and maintain records of regular and after‑hours lab and building access for trained research students and staff.
  • Prepare requisitions, order and inventory compressed gases and controlled substances.
  • Maintain a database of equipment contracts; perform periodic evaluations to confirm contract value and collaborate with administrative unit CS to ensure timely payment.
  • Provide leadership, oversight, and performance management for administrative unit instrument technicians.
  • Ensure effective workflow and alignment with instructional and research needs.
  • Manage administrative unit funds related to consumables purchasing, equipment purchasing, and equipment repair.
  • Analyze vendor catalogs, price lists, and shipping policies to ensure the most economical purchases.
  • Perform cost analysis for new experiments, demonstrations, and other project proposals.
  • Order necessary equipment and supplies for laboratories.
  • Receive and distribute ordered materials to stockroom, faculty, and staff purchasers.
  • Communicate with vendors regarding shipping, supply, delivery, and returns.
  • Prepare annual reports of administrative unit discretionary funds used for purchases of supplies, services, and materials for instruction and research.
