About The Position

Calgary Co-op is seeking a high-impact Director to lead the performance and growth of our Fuel, Car Wash & Convenience Store network — 38 retail locations across Calgary and the surrounding region. With annual business volume approaching $40 million, this is a senior leadership role with full P&L accountability and a mandate to deliver exceptional customer experiences while driving financial results. Reporting to the VP, Operations, you will bring together operations, commercial fuel sales, and revenue management while partnering across technology, merchandising, finance, and human resources. This role demands a leader who can set strategic direction, build organizational capability, and stay close to executional excellence across a multi-site retail portfolio.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in retail fuel pricing and multi-site retail operations
  • Demonstrated P&L accountability for a business unit, region, or major operating portfolio
  • Experience leading teams through a matrix operating model
  • Background working across operations, marketing, finance, technology, merchandising, and sales
  • Strong commercial acumen including revenue growth, margin management, pricing, labour productivity, and cost control
  • Ability to translate strategy into clear plans, routines, metrics, and accountabilities
  • Strong understanding of retail and commercial fuel customer experience and site-level performance management
  • Strong people leadership skills with experience coaching leaders and building high-performing teams
  • Proven ability to lead through influence in a cross-functional environment
  • Track record of building operational discipline and a culture of accountability

Responsibilities

  • Lead the fuel, convenience, and car wash business with full accountability for revenue, margin, operating expenses, EBITDA, and overall financial performance.
  • Develop and execute the annual business plan, operating budget, capital priorities, performance targets, and growth roadmap for the portfolio.
  • Monitor performance across all sites and take action to improve profitability, productivity, customer experience, and operational consistency.
  • Identify opportunities to grow revenue, optimize pricing, and maximize enterprise value.
  • Lead, coach, and develop three direct reports with clear goals, strong accountability, and meaningful development plans.
  • Build leadership capability across the fuel, convenience, and car wash network.
  • Create a culture of ownership, service, safety, operational excellence, and commercial discipline.
  • Ensure site teams understand how their work contributes to customer experience, member value, and overall business performance.
  • Oversee the operational performance of approximately 30 locations, ensuring strong execution, brand standards, safety, compliance, and customer service.
  • Build operational routines, reporting, and scorecards that provide visibility into sales, margin, labour, shrink, maintenance, and site-level profitability.
  • Drive consistent performance management and clear accountability across all sites.
  • Act as the central business leader coordinating across revenue management, operations, marketing, fleet and commercial fuel sales, technology, finance, and procurement.
  • Partner with grocery, food, and convenience retail leaders to align the convenience store offer with broader enterprise merchandising, loyalty, and customer strategies.
  • Lead through influence in a matrix environment, aligning priorities and coordinating execution across multiple teams.
  • Develop strategies to grow the fuel, convenience, car wash, and commercial/fleet business through pricing, promotions, loyalty, merchandising, and site optimization.
  • Partner with marketing and loyalty teams to increase customer visits, basket size, fuel volume, car wash usage, and convenience store conversion.
  • Work with fleet and commercial sales teams to grow B2B fuel relationships and strengthen commercial customer value propositions.
  • Identify market opportunities, competitive threats, and emerging retail concepts to improve network performance.
  • Partner with Food Merchandising to evolve the convenience store offer — product mix, pricing, promotions, food service, merchandising, and labour models.
  • Oversee the car wash business, including pricing, equipment performance, maintenance standards, customer experience, subscription or loyalty opportunities, and profitability.
  • Partner with technology, finance, and operations teams to improve systems, reporting, automation, and digital tools across the network.
  • Use data and analytics to identify opportunities to improve pricing, labour productivity, inventory management, maintenance planning, and customer experience.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement where teams regularly identify opportunities to simplify, reduce waste, and grow the business.
