About The Position

The Director of Planned Giving will manage, plan, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive estate planning and gift program. This role involves interpreting and applying laws and regulations to charitable giving, securing planned gifts, and expanding the philanthropic base through major/planned giving donor fundraising. The position emphasizes integrating core values, developing strategic plans, cultivating donors, providing legal and tax information, managing documentation, mitigating risks, advising donors, tracking estate gifts, collaborating with other departments, educating professionals, managing budgets, overseeing communications, staffing committees, managing recognition societies, maintaining technical expertise, overseeing records, assisting with audits, maintaining policies, pursuing professional development, engaging with the community, and attending meetings. The role is based in Orange, California, and requires a hybrid work schedule with three days onsite and two days remote, with the expectation that leaders live within a reasonable commuting distance to the supported ministry or service area.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required.
  • 8 years of experience in planned giving or related field at a large non-profit institution.
  • Strategic planning, proposal development, and planned giving portfolio management required.
  • Demonstrated experience and success with estate planning and major gift solicitation required.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred in Accounting, and/or Financial Planning.
  • Advanced Degree: J.D. in law with experience in the practice of law, accounting, or financial planning preferred, with strong knowledge in taxation, trust and estates, probate, corporations, contracts, and real estate.
  • 5-8 years of leadership experience preferred.
  • Certified as a Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and/or Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) preferred upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a planned giving strategy tailored to the unique mission of PSJH and donor needs.
  • Monitor and update both short-term and long-range strategic plans with measurable goals and objectives for the planned giving program.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors capable of executing major/planned gifts.
  • Formulate individualized solicitation strategies for planned giving prospects.
  • Provide legal and tax information regarding bequests and life income gifts in consultation with donors’ advisers.
  • Draft and review gift illustrations and legal documents, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Implement systems to mitigate litigation risks related to planned giving.
  • Advise donors on potential methods for donating property and/or funds to the Foundation.
  • Respond promptly to inquiries regarding planned gifts and requests.
  • Track estate gifts from probate to completion.
  • Work closely with Foundation staff on cultivating annual, major, and planned giving prospects.
  • Educate financial professionals about PHS and its mission; conduct seminars for potential donors and professionals.
  • Develop budgets and planning processes to ensure program continuity and growth.
  • Oversee quality of all mailings/publications related to planned giving.
  • Provide staffing for the Planned Giving Committee; participate in committees as directed.
  • Manage the planned giving recognition society.
  • Maintain expertise in the technical aspects of planned giving.
  • Oversee planned gift donor records and database.
  • Assist the Controller in providing an audit trail for planned giving transactions.
  • Maintain departmental policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Pursue professional growth through seminars, workshops, and affiliations.
  • Represent the hospital/foundation in professional/civic service organizations.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
