About The Position

The Director, Payroll is responsible for the leadership, administration, and delivery of Teladoc Health's U.S. and Canadian payroll operations, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing for approximately 3,000 employees. This role oversees payroll operations, governance, compliance, systems optimization, vendor management, and process improvement initiatives. The Director of Payroll leads a team of payroll professionals and partners closely with Human Resources, Finance, Accounting, Tax, Legal, HRIS, and external vendors to ensure payroll processes operate efficiently, maintain strong internal controls, and support organizational growth. This role serves as the primary functional leader for payroll operations and is responsible for continuously improving processes, mitigating risk, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, provincial, and local regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years of progressive payroll experience, including responsibility for complex, multi-state payroll operations.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience, including managing managers and payroll professionals.
  • Experience leading multi-state and Canadian payroll operations.
  • Experience overseeing payroll compliance and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated experience managing payroll operations across diverse employee groups, including multiple classifications, pay structures, and employment types.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll regulations, tax requirements, wage and hour compliance, and payroll controls.
  • Experience partnering with Accounting, Finance, Tax, HR, and external vendors.
  • Demonstrated success leading process improvement and operational efficiency initiatives.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.

  • Experience with Workday payroll and HR systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of U.S. and Canadian payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing, reporting, and compliance.
  • Direct and develop a payroll team consisting of Payroll Managers and Payroll Analysts, including performance management, coaching, succession planning, and professional development.
  • Establish and maintain payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with company requirements, SOX controls, and regulatory standards.
  • Serve as the primary owner and subject matter expert for payroll processes, payroll compliance, and payroll-related systems.
  • Partner with HRIS and technical teams to oversee payroll-related configurations, enhancements, upgrades, testing, and implementation activities across Workday Payroll, Time Tracking, Absence, Benefits, and Compensation modules.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local payroll tax regulations and employment-related payroll requirements throughout the U.S. and Canada.
  • Oversee payroll tax filings, reconciliations, account maintenance, and issue resolution in partnership with payroll service providers and tax agencies.
  • Partner with Stock Administration, Finance, and Accounting teams to ensure accurate payroll processing and tax treatment of equity-based compensation programs, including RSUs, stock option exercises, and ESPP transactions.
  • Lead payroll involvement in audits, including SOX, 401(k), workers' compensation, financial audits, and other internal and external compliance reviews.
  • Oversee payroll reconciliations and collaborate with Accounting on month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities.
  • Monitor payroll service delivery metrics, identify operational risks, and implement solutions that improve efficiency, accuracy, and employee experience.
  • Manage vendor relationships and ensure payroll providers meet service, compliance, and performance expectations.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation, standardization, scalability, and operational excellence.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex payroll matters and ensure timely resolution of payroll-related issues.
  • Partner cross-functionally to support acquisitions, organizational changes, system implementations, and other strategic business initiatives impacting payroll.
  • Maintain documentation, governance practices, and control frameworks supporting payroll operations and regulatory compliance.
